Hi there,
Has anyone managed to get FS to run on more modern computers, please?
It was always a good game with half decent 3D graphics.
IIRC there were issues with codecs for the cut videos at the start but also unusably extreme screen flicker as soon as the 3D window of the game initiates.
I can sort of run it on my old laptop but it is very clunky to use.
It would be great if I could get it to run smoothly on my Windows 7 machine.
TBH I am a bit surprised that there hasn't been a successor FS2 developed.
Perhaps it did not sell well enough.
Whilst I honestly appreciate the efforts made by the people working on this site, I really would like to see an historically accurate / plausible 3D Tactical WW2 sim in the mould of FS.

I have recently been trying to revive my copy of FS on my Windows 7 computer. So far I can get everything in the game to run but the ships are invisible, using the FSP update. I also tried using my older computer which has XP. The game won't even run. I tried many fixes I got from internet searches on games (there is little about FS); nothing works.
As much as I used to enjoy this game it appears I am at a dead end. Too bad because I don't see anything on the horizon to compare, except perhaps World of Warships; but that game will not be a simulation, more of an arcade game albeit with great graphics.

Thanks for the link, hopefully we can get FS running on our computers again.
There used to be a lot of threads on this site or a similar one, dealing with the FSP updates. I guess they were removed when work on the project was stopped. Maybe one day someone will write a new game that emulates FS's realistic feel. Of course economics dictates what type of games would be produced. Maybe I will win the lottery so I can commission a rewrite.

As mentioned in the other thread, turning off "ocean texture" in the preferences settings eliminates the cursor trails and other artifacts. So far I can't find any other settngs to make the ships show up.

Hello,
I don't have much hope but I'll try here. I'm on Windows 7 64bit and I love Fighting Steel. I've made number of attempts to make it work including:
- Installing 10.43 version - Installing d3drm.dll file - Turning off ocean texture - Installing relevant DirectX I've got original version of FS but I can't install Thunder at Sea as I'm receiving an error saying that it's number of files missing for update. So far I've got it working but with graphic disturbed by flickering and also you can't make any turn. Has any member got that working in full and able to provide sort of step by step guide? If so I can't offer cash gratification but he will become my hero and I'll pin his poster (if picture provided) on my wall.

Hi fellow naval enthusiasts, well met, good company.
I am new to PC Naval wargaming in the ww2 era (I played Harpoon for 20 plus years though and played Command at Sea and General Quarters for years on the table) and I would like to get in on some Fighting Steel, but I have a few questions and concerns before I do something ill considered without doing the research first.
1. I have windows 10 and I see Win-7 is an issue? will it even play on my machine?
2. I see the Fighting Steel game on Amazon and note that the NWS store says ownership of FS is required, so I do need to buy both right? (to be absolutely crystal I will need the copy of the game off Amazon AND the download from NWS or is just the Download needed? I am not unhappy to have to buy both at all I consider it worth it.)
3. IS there anything else I should try to get before I begin trying to play?
If you have not seen it there is a beer and skittles Naval Game out on Steam (not too bad but kind of simplistic) that is called "Victory at Sea" I know it does not have the depth of a real wargame ( like what we have on here) but its gotta be better than World of Worships ( I was not impressed with that at all). I want to buy Fighting Steel because I suspect its more accurate and less arcade game like and has far more platforms in it. I am really enthusiastic about Fighting Steel but am afraid it wont work for me.
thank you Chris

Hello felixg91 - welcome to the forums!
You will need a copy of the commercial release of FS to make any use of the 'Fighting Steel Project' files, yes. The explanation for why FS has serious issues with Windows Vista or later is somewhat complex but basically boils down to the choice made by the FS developers in the type of Direct-X mode the game uses, which was depreciated years ago and is no longer supported in modern Windows OS.
I was the primary designer/developer of FSP, but I have not touched the game itself in a couple of years now, so I can only offer more-of "theoretical" advice at this point:
I have a copy of Windows XP that I can run on Oracle Virtualbox (https://www.virtualbox.org/), and last time I tried it FS worked fine using that. If you have an old copy of Win XP and decent hardware you should be able to do the same. (But please DO NOT use Windows XP to browse the web or for routine stuff, its too dangerous since it is unsupported now).
Thanks.

Hello Mister Miller, You have a nice site sir and I like your area of chosen expertise.
Thank you also for the welcome aboard, most gracious and I am heartily pleased to be here! It sounds like it will not run on windows 10 then? SIGH....big sigh. I really wanted to put a Yamato up against a Montana and about a hundred other theoretical situations. I don't have XP or anything else currently. That is disconcerting. I may buy a copy and squirrel it away in hopes, that day may come.
OK so next! What would you recommend to play/simulate? I am playing "Victory at Sea" on Steam but its very shallow and I was looking at the excel materials and docs for "Fighting Steel" and it looks quite comprehensive and well researched, heck the guide to guns torps and ships is a nice database just to have anyways, so thanks.
I really want to buy and play some of your games! "Supremacy at Sea" sounded interesting too, but its not supported. Is the "Rule the Waves" coming out with a ww2 era version? Also would it include "hypothetical" units like A-150, Montana, Lion, Sovietsky Soyuz and H-class? If so maybe I can wait and buy that.
Thank you for your valuable time, knowledge and advice...oh and for being honest. Have a day of superior quality sir. Chris

Chris,
Thank you for the kind words, they are appreciated.
I can't release much on 'RTW 2' yet as it is currently very early in dvelopment, but we have posted (somewher here) that it will include the WW2 period as part of its scope.
SAS 'Supremacy at Sea' worked without any issues the last time I tried it out under the (then-current) JRE, but as you state we cannot officially support it since the developer had to move on due to real-life issues (which of course we fully understoodd, as we suffer those ourselves from time-to-time being a independent small developer/publisher). So it very well may work without any issues, but since we cannot support it I cannot recommend it.
If you are looking for a modern naval PC game I would recommend 'Command" (available on Steam and elsewhere), sorta the successor to the older Harpoon game series in spirit if not in fact. A (somewhat new to me) game that might interest you is "Atlantic Fleet" available on Steam...I own it but have not had the time to play more than a few minutes of it, but it is rather highly rated and seems slightly more realistic than not to my (brief) first impression...it is a turn-based WW2-period tactical naval game with full 3D graphics.
Thanks.

Thank You Sir, I am the one who should be grateful and appreciative.
I am indeed aware of Command (and I still play Harpoon, or I did- I have not tried on the new PC, a big fan, I used to correspond with Mr. Bond often), the big one, WW2 is the current obsession. I used to do a great deal of miniatures ( Command At Sea and GHQ especially and I had a marvelous library and armada's of ships in 1:2400 scale) they are all gone, I lost it all a few years ago when I lost my job and everything I owned. So I miss that a lot, PC naval gaming is a sort of a substitute, and I am rebuilding the library but the model ships are not coming back, I don't like to paint much anymore and storing them was the issue that led to their loss.
SaS is however still an option, one may always place a bet and takes a chance. I was on SUBSIM.COM last night because there is forum topic on getting FS to run on WIN 7 which may work for Win 10, which I may try (my choice- you have warned me openly and honestly, if it doesn't work well you wont hear me complain). I would just be disappointed but it is probably worth a try.
NO, no, don't compromise RTW2 please, because it sounds from what is not being said, that it will be my Holy Grail! To include Hypothetical/1946 units and editing tools (both scenario and platform/weapon/system), is the only suggestion I would make, and you guys have way better heads for what belongs in a game than me so I look forward to that eagerly and utterly trust in a favorable outcome.
Atlantic Fleet? Hmmm OK ....I have not heard of it until now. As soon as I get home from work I will scope it out, I play Victory at Sea for hours every night so maybe it will be just my cup of grog.
Thank You again Mr. Miller or WIlliam or Wil or Bill as you prefer sir, I hate to be presumptuous or overly familiar, but you do seem a good friendly knowledgable sort. :-) Have a great weekend, I shall be a frequent visitor. Chris

Hey, I'm retired Navy and really miss FS .... the new "arcade" games just are not realistic.....except they do have great graphics. FS included realistic gunnery and torpedo range and hit damage, morale, sea state, crew experience and fatigue. You can even set up your own engagement for "what if" battles. I'm tired of having to advance to the next plateau to be allowed to use another ship and get some phony medal. The super battleship Yamato in FS allows penetration of it's brittle WW1 armor by a standard US 16 inch gun. I have pictures from the Washington Navy Yard of a Yamato class armor plate holed by a US 16inch AP shell .... like a hot knife through butter. Yeah, I miss FS. Jim Gee
