I'm creating this thread with the intention of establishing a location for anyone who wants to share their custom ShipName files. If you could, please give a brief description of the changes you've made to the original list for that nation or just state that it is an original list and what you used for naming conventions. The understanding is that any Ship Name file that is posted can be used in part or whole by other players. I recommend before copying these files into the Data folder that you make a copy of the file that came with the game to make it easy to go back if you want. (I have an "Originals" folder in "Rule the Waves" folder that I put the originals into but whatever works. Here's one I've made for the USA. B/BB - Still named for states although I've rearranged the order to suit my preference for keeping ships inside classes geographically connected to make it easier to tell which ships are what class during a battle. Alaska and Hawaii are still in the BC list since they weren't states during the game's timeframe. BC - Mostly Pre-WW1 US battles starting with the American Revolution and famous ships' names like Essex and Enterprise. Many of the names I used are from the Essex class of WW2. CA/CL - Cities. I've expanded the original list using this Wikipedia page. I've used the city names for the armored cruisers that originally had state names historically that were eventually changed to free up the names for battleships. I also went through and eliminated duplicate names. DD - I expanded the original list again using this Wikipedia list and went through and eliminated duplicates. Submarines - Same as destroyers, just went and took the Wikipedia list and eliminated names that were just a letter and number and any duplicates. MS- I left the original list at the end of the names but the MS were the reason I started fudging with the file in the first place. I've gone through a couple of different MS lists while playing but currently the first 32 names are US rivers and then starting with Lapwing, I've used the bird names from the minesweepers (AM) list on the Wikipedia page, again eliminating duplicates. In total the list is up to almost one thousand names. USAShipNames.dat (9 KB) Like I wrote at the top feel free to use any or all of the list and to customize it to your liking.

I never made a file for automatically naming. I just named them as they were built. I've got two pages {English and American} of names.
Capital Cities for CA. Other cities for CL. I made a class of Raider CLs and named them for Indian tribes. I once named the cruisers for rivers like some of the old cruisers/sailing ships {Merrimac, Potomac, etc} but I like the city names.
For the Brits, I named the Legacy fleet CLs and above after mythology. Bs got monster names, CAs got male heroes, and CLs were named for women. For DDs I named the class after something descriptive {variations of fast or agile, breeds of dogs, types of flys, tribal names and melee weapons.

Maybe a moderator should pin this? It might not get frequent adds and fall away from visibility; it sounds like a very useful thread to me.

I just 'stickied' it, so it should stay somewhere near the top of the list on this forum.

Soviet Union list. I've noticed that when Russia collapses the leader's title changes to General Secretary. I've made a crude SovietShipNames file and I'm posting it for anybody to use or modify as they see fit. The Soviets had naming conventions and I tried to follow it but there was a lot of politics and renaming of ships as people fell out of favor. Some of the names were re-used for different sized ships so there is some duplication in say the CA and BC ship lists but the game won't use the same name twice at the same time. I left the destroyers and smaller ships names alone as eventually the Soviets went back to the Russian naming conventions for destroyers. I left most of the Russian names that weren't obvious aristocracy and just moved the Soviet names to the front. To use it you have to copy and move the RussiaShipNames.Dat file (or just rename it, that's what I did) and then rename this file to RussiaShipNames.Dat and put it in the Data Folder. It was late at night and I am no expert on either the Soviet or Russian navies and their history so I'm sure there are errors. Some of the named persons are probably also people from later time periods but I didn't go through that and check. There weren't a lot of names available to begin with since the Soviets didn't build a large navy prior to the cold war. I also made a crude version of the small Soviet ensign since one didn't seem to be included with the game. To use them in game you have to move or rename the Russian flags manually and rename the Soviet flags as Russian flags. The Soviet flag kind of blends in with the Japanese ensign because at that scale they look like negative images of each other. I would prefer the later White ensign with the blue bottom stripe and red star and hammer/sickle but it didn't come into service until the mid 30's and so is outside the timeframe of the game. [Edit - I have zero problems if somebody who is more familiar with the Russian and Soviet navies wants to take this list or picture and fix or enhance them. Knock yourself out and share the result.]

Thematic Royal Navy DD Lists fifey made the suggestion/request for RTW2 for Thematic ship lists. I thought I would offer a work around for RTW1 destroyers for those who want to play the Royal Navy (the navy that themed lists are probably most associated with) in RTW1. It requires some micromanagement up front for every theme you want to use but it works, especially for large groups of DD's, better than manually entering the names yourself unless you prefer the names in an exact order. i.e. Daring has to be before Dragon, etc. The below sharable link to a RAR file on my google drive has a set of themed name lists for Royal Navy destroyers starting with the River class and then the L class of 1913 which is where they actually started using themes. The names are in no particular order and I went through all of the classes from the pre-WW1 L-class through WW2 using the list in Wikipedia. Many of the classes in Wikipedia use two different letters( i.e. V & W class Destroyers). I split them up into letter specific lists. To use the lists, you need to modify the Great BritainShipNamesList.DAT file in the Data Folder. Download and unpack the RAR file namelist files into a folder. MAKE A COPY OF THE Great BritainShipNamesList.DAT FILE. Set the copy aside in another folder or rename it so you can restore it for games where the UK is an AI nation. Go into the names list file and erase all of the names in the file between [DD] and [SSPrefix] Copy the names out of the desired theme(S) file and insert them between [DD] and [SSPrefix] Build the desired number of destroyers with that theme. Don't build more ships than you have names in that theme though because there is no DD Prefix for the UK, I don't know how the game will react to that. Replace the names in the file with the new theme whenever you want to make a change. drive.google.com/open?id=1x2hvMI-ujpaTmP20SoYnB5MXbZpr2Os_

Here's my Soviet Union list - all imperial names have been... purged *ba-dumm-tss* As I just realized that bcoopactual made a file with Soviet names, I had a quick scan through it and added some of "Stalin's Republics" (spelling errors fixed - female republics now have female adjective endings). Included are 44 new BB names [Soviet republics, revolutions and just about anything to which "red" could be added], 23 new BC names [named after early Soviet submarine classes (revolutionary theme), cities and famous battles], 45 new CA names [revolutionaries and Stalin prize winners for arts] and ~20-ish new CL names [winds, jewels, birds]. www.dropbox.com/s/xybfo1mfpexcig4/RussiaShipNames.dat?dl=0

I was hoping somebody would fix or better yet put out an upgraded Soviet name list. Thanks. I'm going to substitute it into my current game. I apologize for butchering the translations. Hmm, my game has already used some of the names from my screwed up list. I'll have to go into the gamesave file and fix them because it will bug me now to know that they are wrong. Thanks again.

Hi everyone, As I am a native Chinese speaker, I decided to expand the current ship name list of Qing China(The old list was mostly enough but I tend to run out of names on DDs and MS, also I felt like it will be good to see some more varied names). I tweaked the list to be more aligned with the naming practice of Qing Dynasty navy(In particular Beiyang Navy). The main issue with Chinese ship naming at that time is that ships are really not named based on their type. Ship names are generally picked based on certain particular meaning, and to an extent convey the ship's role. For example, the two ramming cruiser of the BeiYang Navy are named Chao-Yong(Exceeding Courage) and Yang-Wei(Display Might), where as cruiser have names like Zhi-Yuan(Reaching Far, and if taken less literally can meaning something like "implacable") and battleship like Ding-Yuan(Pacifying great expanse)(These are very rough translations since many of these terms are old Chinese figure of speech). Furthermore, ships ordered at similar time tends to be named similarly, regardless of type. This is why there are many xxxx-Yuan ships in the Beiyang Navy. There also seems to be no practice of naming ships after location and people as far as I know in Qing Dynasty. As a result, its very difficult to determine a Qing Chinese ship's type by its name even for a native speaker like myself. So I tried in making the list to create some general pattern within a class of ship to make it easier to identify a ship of a class and at the same time try to follow the Qing practice of naming ships after words that convey particular attribute. Historically some of the names I used for cruiser are actually assigned to gunboat or destroyers, but for the sake of making everything easier to identify I decided its better to make everything fit a format. As a general pattern: B/BBS: Generally grandiose names, some of the terms named after various main city gate of Beijing. BC: Various mythical/animal terms regarding flight, fortune and power(Inspired by the ways IGN names their carriers, but I try to use abstract words over actual names of flying animals) CA: Mostly terms having to do with displaying or spreading power and courage, I tried to include most xxxx-Yuan form of names as most of them are historically armoured or protected cruisers. CL: Having mostly to do with sea, cruising, far reaching, generally in the Hai-xxxx or xxxx-Hai form DD: Names starts with Lei(Thunder, also derived from Yu-Lei(Torpedo in Chinese))+Characters from Bagua or old Chinese words for various times of day.(This naming format is based on a series of 8 torpedo boats ordered by Guangzhou Navy), Fei(Flying), or Fu (Based on the large torpedo boat Fu Long). If the names run out, I changed the prefix of new DDs to Qu-#(for Qu-Zhu-Jian,destroyers in Chinese.) SS: Named after various type of dragons in Chinese mythology(This is the naming convention used by Republic of China for their submarines) MS/AMC: Other names taken from historical names of small gun boats, auxiliary ships, etc... The list is still a little short because its quite tough to come up with names that fit the way Qing Chinese Navy names their ships, I can try to expand the list if people feel its too short. Given my experience with the Chinese campaigns though I feel it is very hard to build enough BB/BC/CAs for the list to actually run out. I will also try to do a naming list later that follows the naming convention of Republic of China navy. Attachments:QingShipNames.dat (1.69 KB)

With the kind permission of bcoopactual, I have done some edit job with his Soviet shipname list, removing religious and royal names, some Russian endings transliteration disorder and several other minor issues. As distinct from excellent dimovski's list, my version is oriented more strongly to unmodded game version, wich is implied to end at 1925 or several years later, before the beginning of Stalin's era, and so I leave early Soviet names from bcoopactual's list only. Thank you for you time and effort. If I may ask, the wikipedia list for Soviet submarines has some classes where the submarines were given number names instead of personal names but it is not consistent about whether there was a hyphen in the name. For example, the Dekabrist-class has submarines names D-1 through D-6 and the L-class sometimes has the submarine name listed as L3 and sometimes as L-3 in the article. Do you know what is the correct way to list the number names? If the hyphen (-) is supposed to be included we will have to add it to your list for the DD and SS prefix entries. Great work. I'm almost finished with my current game but since I usually play only to the end of 1926 or the end of the last war if goes past 1926 I will adopt your list for future Revolutions.

Hyphen is obligate at Russian (Soviet) sources, and I think it will be more correct to use it in game. P.S. All early (pre-1927) Soviet-built subs was of Holland 602 class and have Russian designation "АГ-.." (abbreviation from "Американский Голланд"), that is usually transliterated phonetically as "AG-", though may be it will be more correct to transliterate it semantically as "AH-" (from "American Holland"). I do not know which variant is more correct by English rules of translation and transliteration.
