Has anyone ever seen this transpire, *while* you were at war? In all my games I have not, and I am wondering if it was possible in RTW1 or if this is a new feature.

I've seen an alliance revoked as a result of raising tensions with other nations and just before war breaks out, but I don't know about during a war.

It can happen during a war. Had an alliance with UK, who were still controlling Egypt/Suez channel, which they revoked several turns into my war with Japan.

I've had it happen a couple of times during war as well. I sometimes wish the AI was penalized for this a la making a separate peace and suffering the consequences, but diplomacy in this game is not paradox levels

Well thank you, that's interesting. I guess I was just lucky enough to not "stress out" an ally while at war in my RTW1 games.

I have seen that happen during war as well. Rather shocking when it happens.

Playing as CSA vs Spain with the alliance of GB, I got the impression that, even without revoking the alliance, GB had a role in precipitating peace with Spain. This peace treaty without border changes prevented CSA from taking possession of Spanish colonies on which its troops had landed after a continuous stream of CSA naval victories. I cannot explain otherwise the hastily agreed peace, which was made against the opinion of the head of the Navy (that is, mine) and - I presume - of the majority of CSA people (unrest level was moderate). The same happened in a successive war. This would also make sense, as the GB also has possessions in the Caribbean and may not like a strengthening of the CSA in that area. If my impression matches some clever rule hidden in the game (in fact, it is not mentioned in the RTW manual, let alone the RTW2 manual), this could change the decision about whether to have certain allies.
