Displacement, Ship Graphic, Ship Size and Hit %

If you start with a 29,900 ton displacement BC and add just one more displacement tonnage of 100 to make it 30,000, the ship graphic increases in size. Is this a direct measurement of hit probability for larger sized ships or does this mechanic work some other way? Want to know if there are any breaks on hit chances with displacement, otherwise there's no reason to limit myself an extra 100 tons here and there. This displacement level happens all along the scale with various ship classes. Be nice to know...
