There is a change for the time elapsed to become optional ? Not sure what you mean here. I don't think there's any change to that part of the battle engine coming in RtW2.

I think they mean the end date for the whole game.

As far as I know the end of the game is set to 1950, but I guess as in RTW1 you could continue to play afterwards,

I hope you can do a full 1900-1972 playthrough, I might finally manage to conquer the entire world by the end date.
Btw, it's possible to "keep playing" if you edit the save file to roll back the clock, but the AI really does not like it.

If you want to extend your game play it is best to do the "rollbacks" over the whole game, i.e. substract a year ech January until you have played that year often enough. This works with tech due to the invention year functionality but the economies are growing, so I recommen not going very large fleets if you do this. Personally I really liked my 10x (i.e. up to 500 year) plays but later on went down to 5x. The best about this is that the "weird" periods (semidreadnoughts, cross-deck fire etc.) in ship design last longer.
