This marvel of Italian engineering does not only have its sole 3 gun turret in Q instead of A, and its funnels in the middle of the forward armament. One of the funnels actually goes straight through the B turret. View AttachmentIt would be interesting design focusing on torpedo protection system more robust at the ends. However RTW does not use it...

One of the funnels actually goes straight through the B turret. This is brilliant future-proofing. When they invent techniques to lower the back half of the ship they will have all the advantages of rear fire while still retaining the small belt of all-forward. And when they need to eliminate a turret to take advantage of heavier depleted-uranium shells, the work is already done for them.

For my Japanese campaing, it would be very useful to have some benefits of all-backward main battery...

This marvel of Italian engineering does not only have its sole 3 gun turret in Q instead of A, and its funnels in the middle of the forward armament. One of the funnels actually goes straight through the B turret. Actually, this is an excellent design. That second funnel (between B and Q turrets) is the main funnel for the engine. The first funnel (running through B turret) is the funnel for the oven, because on an Italian ship, having 2 more 16" guns is far less important that having decent pizza. This also explains another point; just aft of Q turret, there's a catapult, despite the obvious lack of an aircraft hangar. That's actually an ingenious weapon system; they launch pots of pizza sauce at the enemy, and the sauce coats the rangefinders, making gunnery nearly impossible. Then, with the entire crew pre-occupied with licking the sauce off of the rangefinders (including stokers and damage control teams), the target becomes a sitting duck. The guns are merely for finishing off these disabled ships, so the fact that she only has 5 (plus the 2 in B turret, although they can only fire straight ahead because the turret can't rotate without damaging the oven) isn't really a disadvantage; in fact, it's actually a positive, since it means more displacement is freed up for pizza ingredient storage.

Hm... I can't quite place my finger on it, but there's something funny about this 7" coastal battery with its four 8" guns...

Hey, at least it's still within WNT limits!

Hey, at least it's still within WNT limits! But look at the sacrifices that they made to do it - only four guns, no propulsion plant, and hardly any armor worth mentioning on 10,000 tons!
More seriously, I think it's due to my ships identifying the battery as a 7" battery while they were shooting at it, though I'd have expected the 'ship' detail in the post-battle summary details window would've had the correct class on it.

Let me just wonder why they equiped that coastal battery with rudder...

Title says 7" gun battery. Under gun caliber it says 8".

With the 1903 Wright Flyer still being the better part of a year from its first flight at the in-game time I took that picture, I don't think that an attempt to disguise an airfield as a coastal battery would be necessary - or, for that matter, likely even desirable. Similarly, I doubt if it would be desirable to disguise a weather station as a coastal battery, if you take "NAS" to stand for something like "Naval (or National) Aerological Station."

No, I think it's just such a clever strategy that plebeians like us just can't understand the magnificence.
