I've read that the Turkish government offered to sell the Goeben to the then West German government in the early 1960s. The Germans declined to take them up on the offer. Does anyone know why? Budgetary constraints? Perhaps an understandable unwillingness to seem excessively proud of something in the country's military past?
The Goeben would have made a wonderful floating museum.

Actually, in 1963 the West German's offered to buy the Yavuz from the Turks. They refused until they realized how expensive coaling the ship would be and then a couple of years later, decided to ask the West German's if they wanted it, they had now lost interest.
