My doctrines, how I use the ships and tech, varies from the general vanilla default. It would be nice if we had a pre-battle management phase to do a few things. This brings together at least one other suggestion in what could be put here.
1 - Assign divisions to fleets
I build carriers with some measure of self defense guns and use torpedo destroyers as an attack arm. Therefore destroyers starting assigned to my carriers are less useful though I could see general cruising with them nearby. In one battle the carrier divisions had light cruiser division attached and both had destroyer divisions which doubled the depletion of the front line destroyers.
What is more difficult is once you have independent carrier groups from fleet tactics those cruisers and destroyers can't be reassigned to support/screen you battleships in the battle group. For my doctrines this is very harsh.
Some of my cruisers in one game were built as small AA support meant to sail near high value capital ships. Yet the vanilla can drop them to start in the "scout" function way out alone where they are quite vulnerable and not doing their AA job.
2 - Assign airplanes/squadrons to auto recon and cap
There are various examples of how the defaults, even with the float plane focused search, doesn't work well for some doctrines. In the early plane age you have aviation ships with perhaps a dozen float planes capable of "mass" bombing with one and two floatplanes on the cruisers. There isn't a vanilla game way to separate who will do bombing without lossing the auto management of recon and CAP. Speaking of CAP in the early plane tech when all you have is float planes the float planes are needed for recon, bombing and CAP.
The auto recon management doesnt really seem to indicate how many planes are going to be used. At shorter ranges out planes can cover more lateral. I had a few floatplanes on cruisers and found that a chunk of precious torpedo plane squadrons had left on the auto recon. In this case, different from the above, I wanted the torpedo squads at full strength while the recon floatplanes looked for the enemy.
I do like the auto recon and cap functions it just that I would like them to be "missions" and with this new suggestion of pre-battle management to allow me time to do it.
3 - "Ready to battle?" pop up
On the start of the tactical map when you go to advance time I would there to be a "ready to battle" pop up. There would be a yes/no button and a reminder to check your starting configuration of ships and planes.
