There exists a Preferences file in the main directory of C:\NWS\Rule the Waves 2 Let's use it to create templates for Airbase population. Add in the Preferences file a default Airbase for each Size and allow list of Role, Number and 3 different Templates. When a new Airbase gets built or upgraded, we could choose the template from a list. When right clicking on an Airbase in the left hand window of the Air Group Management list and selecting 'Auto Add Aircraft' would display a list of the templates in your Preferences file for you to choose from. Conceivably, you should be able to create 0-9 templates in the format below. You could even name each template as you wish for example instead of seeing the name 'Airbase Template 2' you could rename that in the Preferences file to say 'Mediterranean Bomber Airbase' or 'Pacific Scout Airbase' or whatever. This idea works in conjunction with THIS POST. For example: [0Airbase20] Name=Airbase Template 0 Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 [0Airbase40] Name=Airbase Template 0 Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Dive bomber=0 [0Airbase60] Name=Airbase Template 0 Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Dive bomber=0 Medium bomber=0 [0Airbase80] Name=Airbase Template 0 Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Dive bomber=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Medium bomber=0 etc... [1Airbase20] Name=Airbase Template 1 Flying boat=4 Fighter=6 Torpedo bomber=10 [1Airbase40] Name=Airbase Template 1 Flying boat=8 Fighter=8 Torpedo bomber=12 Dive bomber=12 [1Airbase60] Name=Airbase Template 1 Flying boat=9 Fighter=9 Torpedo bomber=15 Dive bomber=15 Medium bomber=12 [1Airbase80] Name=Airbase Template 1 Flying boat=10 Fighter=13 Torpedo bomber=15 Dive bomber=15 Torpedo bomber=15 Medium bomber=12 etc... [2Airbase20] Name=Airbase Template 2 Flying boat=4 Fighter=8 Torpedo bomber=8 [2Airbase40] Name=Airbase Template 2 Flying boat=6 Fighter=10 Torpedo bomber=12 Dive bomber=12 [2Airbase60] Name=Airbase Template 2 Flying boat=6 Fighter=12 Torpedo bomber=15 Dive bomber=15 Medium bomber=12 [2Airbase80] Name=Airbase Template 2 Flying boat=8 Fighter=15 Torpedo bomber=15 Dive bomber=15 Torpedo bomber=15 Medium bomber=12 etc...

Oh God, no! Could everyone please stop campaigning for the whole air templates please? (With a pretty please on top?) Copy-pasting an airfield/carrier's setup onto another airfield/carrier (even if they don't have the same amount of planes and we have to fiddle a bit afterwards) would be perfectly fine - and if Fredrik manages to implement Active/Reserve/Mothball status for the AirForce as well, that'll be just icing on the cake - alternately, we can go along just modifying a couple of airfields/carriers and then copy-pasting it on all the others. It'd still be far less clicking than right now, and still leave me with an ability to customize squadrons on my airfields/carriers to my liking. And, for those among you that can't see how this might be important, here's an example: Say you've got 2 carriers of the same class (i.e.carrying the same amount of planes) operating in two different theatres: First carrier is in an area where there are tons of enemy aircraft flying around - and I'd really like some extra Fighters on CAP - so I'd like to put in 2 (or even 3 or 4) Fighters for every Bomber onboard that carrier. The other carrier, OTOH, is in an area where there are few (or none) enemy aircraft around - so I can easily get away with 'fielding' 2 (or even 3 or 4 - or 6) Bombers for each Fighter onboard. And please note that this goes for Airfields as well - with the added bonus of placing Medium bombers on the ones further away from the main front, so they can get in on the action, too. Requiring some kind of a 'template' - and thus forcing me to choose between one of those two (or three) options when, clearly, both (all three) are equally valid - will just make me fight with one hand tied behind my back and thus 'stifle my creativity' (so to speak). Also: williammiller Good job on the 'like' button - now can we get a 'dislike' one as well?

What's wrong with a preference file for new airbases? If Fredrik W creates a copy and paste feature for airbases, that's cool. But the current method of airbase expansion is usually just adding a new Role and maxing the number of planes in that squadron. That sucks. If we had a preferences setup, new bases would at least have a standard template. And then we could fiddle with it.

If we had a preferences setup, new bases would at least have a standard template. And then we could fiddle with it. That would only work if Fredrik also includes Active/Reserve/Mothballed status for Aircraft at the same time - otherwise we'll have to go in and manually remove all the unnecessary squadrons (and I don't know about you, but I like to keep just a squadron or two - like, 20% of planes - on base/carrier fully manned even in peacetime - just in case) in that base, which would just add another job for both us and Fredrik while adding absolutely nothing of value whatsoever. And let's not forget the customization mentioned in my post above, either. So, yeah, if Fredrik's gonna add something, I'd prefer he concentrates on the Copy-Paste feature first. I'd like my bases/ships empty at start, thanks - and then just copy-paste an existing Air Wing composition, custom-tailored to the area they're operating in. Especially if I'm adding/upgrading whole batches of them at once. Cheers!

srndacfulThen what's wrong with this: [Airbase20] Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 [Airbase40] Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Dive bomber=0 [Airbase60] Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Dive bomber=0 Medium bomber=0 [Airbase80] Flying boat=0 Fighter=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Dive bomber=0 Torpedo bomber=0 Medium bomber=0 You get your cake. I eat it.

Let me ask you an off topic... You are advocating for the empty airbase, yes? So during peacetime, do you disband your planes? Obviously that's less upkeep, unless I've been misinformed. I don't disband my planes. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Should I? What's the advantage of disbanding? Obviously less upkeep, but the downside is the bases are without fighters at the start of a war. How long does it take to populate them and then what is the time needed to get Good Experience?
Thanks.

dizzySorry, but I don't think you're getting my point: IMHO, your solution doesn't add an 'easy fix to micro-management' - it merely complicates it by adding another step (and a whole lot of coding - taking up Fredrik's valuable time) to an already complicated situation. Your solution would only set up the Air Wing's composition when Base/Carrier is built according to a single 'template' - and ignoring the fact that I'd have to have 3 (or more) Area 'templates' for each of the 2 (or 3) kinds of airfields + 3 (or 4 or 6) classes of carriers. And let's not even forget that those templates are liable to change - which you'd then have to do manually. So, please, for the love of God, drop them. Templates are a good idea if you're working with 2 or 3 of them - but 15 is way too many. Cheers!

How long does it take to populate them and then what is the time needed to get Good Experience? Thanks. As I said, I usually keep a squadron or two at the base in peacetime - the composition varies according to the Area - so, this might be Fighters in the Mediterranean or Flying Boats in the Pacific or TB/DB on the Carriers - or (usually) a combination of them, but no more than about 20% of max base capacity or 50% Carrier capacity. Obviously, you save money by disbanding them, but then the entire 'reactivating' and 'refilling' part when war starts gets to be an absolute slog (hand cramps may last up to half an hour) and first couple of months (up to half a year IMHO, but I haven't really measured) will leave you weak as unexperinced pilots are trained up - unless you saw the war coming and prepared accordingly. Upside, OTOH, is the massive amount of money left for build-up and inter-war construction. So ... depends on your playing style, I guess. Cheers!

I revised the OP idea to coincide with THIS POST.
