Here's another one on my iPod, "The Fighting Lady." Non-fiction, footage was shot abard the USS Yorktown (the 2nd one) during the war. youtu.be/B5JbXRDOP60I enjoyed "Men of the Fighting Lady", good deck and flight scenes. The Bridges at Toko-Ri was good also. Yes, "The Bridges at Toko-Ri was a good film. It was pretty faithful to Mitchener's book (which I've read).

There was another interesting movie that I downloaded from YouTube but (is no longer there) titled "Ships With Wings" that was filmed in 1941 aboard the HMS Ark Royal (before she was sunk). It has some good shots of Fairey Swordfishes, Blackburn Skuas and Fairey Fulmars.

Here is a another interesting movie about the Norwegian underground starring Paul Muni. It's titled "Commandos strike at Dawn. It was produced in 1942". Besides Muni, it starred Cedric Hardwicke, Rosemary DeCamp, Alexander Knox, Lillian Gish and a host of good actors.
FYI- Generally you will not see any Vietnam movies in my posts. The only two I like are "Flight of the Intruder" and "We were soldiers once... and young". It was my war, and I prefer to forget about it, when possible but I hope you will put them in this thread if you like them, that's what this thread is all about.

One movie I still watch occasionally, like and now that I know more pick apart - Sink the Bismarck.
Speaking of battleship movies - has anyone seen the one about the end of the Yamato? It was filmed (taped) in Japan, is about the final sortie I believe. It's one of those I'd like to see, but am too cheap to shell out the $ as it may be horrible!

I really like "Sink the Bismarck", watch all the time. Yamato is an interesting movie. I watch the attack scene on Youtube. Those 25mm guns were weak, ammunition supply was too small, the range and accuracy was terrible.

One of the best films by the British is the autobiographical story of Douglas Bader who lost both legs in a flying accident in 1931 and then rejoined the RAF during WWII as a Wing Commander. The movie is titled "Reach for the Sky". Bader was later shot down and the German's allowed the British fly over and drop some new legs for him and allowed to sit in an ME-109. He wanted to test fly it but that didn't work. He tried to escape and the German's threatened to take his legs away. "The Cockleshell heroes" is another good movie.

I've got the DVD of 'Yamato' - they used a 2/3 sized mockup of the ship for filming IIRC.
The battle scenes/CGI are good, the dialog is not great but not horrible, and overall the film gives you a tiny glimpse of what it must have been like to be on board that ship during its final sortie...the feeling of (essentially) helplessness as the US air armada strafes and pounds the ship is very evident, at least to this western viewer.

Do you have the movie version with English subtitles?
I agree about the battle scene, they were really just cannon fodder as the fighters performed SEAD and essentially disabled any air defenses the Yamato could put up. The AA 18 inch rounds were useless. It is an exciting scene.

Another one of my favorite movies is "Zulu" with Stanley Baker as Lt. John Roush Chard of the Royal Engineers. It was Michael Caine first movie as Lt. Gonville Bromhead. This is the story of the action at Rorke's Drift, Natal during the Zulu War. Rorke's Drift was a mission station over the hill from the disasterous defeat at Isandlwana on January 22,1879 when 1800 British and Native troops were overwelmed.
The Rorke's Drift was garrisoned by the 24th Regiment of Foot South Warwickshire Regiment manned by Welsh men. It was B company, 2nd battalion which was later renamed the South Wales Borderers. The garrison of about 139 officers and men were attacked by over 2000 Zulus. The Zulus incurred 500 casualties and the British lost 17 killed and 10 wounded. The key was the use of unlimited ammunition provided to the soldiers firing .455 Cal. Martini-Henry breech loading rifles and the use of sand bags to prepare defensive revetments from which the soldiers could fire and be protected. They left the area when they spied Lord Chelmsford coming up with a relief force. For the British nation it was a great relief after the defeat the day before at Isandlwana. I believe that more Victoria Crosses were handed out in this one battle than any other in the English history, eleven.

Ok, thanks. I went to Amazon and found that version. BTW, the battle scene at the end is now on YouTube and I downloaded it. It includes the sinking of the ship and the men in the water. The background theme music is "Ghost Riders in the Sky" , very cool.
