Am I the only one here not caring about immunity zones or penetration distances? Normally it is an appropriate tactic to close in and fight it out at point blank range. My capitals are all equipped with a hunting setup of 2 x 3 or 2 x 4 forward. I use all forward setups, but I still build for immunity zones, and am not so inclined to close to point blank immediately (though if a death ride called for tactically, all forward designs are certainly best equipped for it, and the death in that ride tends to be on the other side).
I am very careful about all forward guns. It is quite risky in situation where forces are equal. I have lost 2 modern battleship because they were hit in short time to turrets disabling/destroying them both. As ships on both side were damaged the chance to disegnage was minimal and both ships were lost.
At least if I use all forward guns I remain in immunity zone not to have both turrets destroyed by one hit.

This is a huge reason why I love (okay, sometimes hate/love) RtW. Having different, but fairly equally valid opinions, own "styles" is far more fun for me than looking up the guide / wiki / min-maxing website for the "mathematically optimal solution" and just go with it. Even though looking for the "mathematically optimal solution" regardless is also a great deal of fun.
I had some very decent, even surprisingly good and consistent success playing with A-H while using small, 4(A)+4(B), cheap, dangerously under-armored all-forward battlecruisers back in RtW, but personally I never had the stomach to base a "slugging-it-out" battleship force on all forward arrangement. Immunity zones, I take them as a guideline, but generally keep in mind that without FCR weather or time of the day can and will overrule the numbers on the paper and I may not be able to enforce the range I deem optimal. Part of the reasons why I regard compartmentalization and damage control highly (and set it so on research), maybe even more so than armor plates.

I find it more satisfying to do the butchering myself;-)) One reason why all forward works well mostly : The AI tries to keep medium distance, so if you get closer they run. Then it is all my firepower against one or two backward turrets only.
