Anyone play the old 'Carriers at War' from SSG? The AI was brilliant and the searching, report/false report/muddle was a commander's nightmare. Loved CAW - always wished that they had ported more of the add-on scenarios when they redid the game. The suspense coming from fog-of-war was wonderful, in terms of having no idea what the enemy OOB was and where they might be coming from - really reminiscent of walking into the deep dark woods at night and not knowing where or when the monsters might jump out. Another thing I recall from it is how performing just a few strikes would wreck most air groups (in terms of disabled planes). I loved that game. It's the reason I'm still playing carrier-themed wargames all these years later.

only bomb which i roughly know penetration of is the 1400 lb bomb which has a penetration of around 6.5 inches (it penned 6.5 inches but cant pen 7 inches not 7.5 inches of turret roof) these were dropped from dive bombers these are full on ap bombs It seems too much penetration ability. I have only this 2 as i start too late and in my next playthrough I have not yet any carrier battle (quite strange in 1944).
year 1944 - 1400 lb bomb Engine room hit D * (Kestrel from CV Glorious, AP) - 5.5" deck - 1500 lb bomb Engine room hit D (Typhoon D from CV Victorious, AP) - 5.5" deck
In one case 5.5" of deck was enough to defeat 1500 lb AP bomb.
Right now I have carrier with 5" armour on flight deck but it is small fleet size and there is some problem with AI. As I will finish playthrough I will report it but there would be needed some finetunning for small fleet as it seems there is no fun after aroun 1930.
was the 1500 lb bomb dropped from a torpedo bomber ? or fighter i noticed that my 2000 lb bomb couldnt pen 7 inches of armor when dropped from a torpedo bomber

midgame carriers:
To be honest- I hate theses designs. I have a clear concept in my mind and I hate to built my CV with 8 8" guns (why not some Graf Zeppelin-like 8x2 6" casemates?). I feel you. If you're playing an underdog nation, you may be able to get around it by buying ships from a nation with better tech. If I have to build them myself, I just make a 100 aircraft ship with 8x5 guns, then up the guns to 8" and substract planes until the weight requirement is met. Once the ship is built, I sent it 4 more months to the drydock to change the guns for 5" and get some more planes in. It's an expensive workaround, but it's done just once and, afterwards, you're free to design whatever you want. I build my aircraft carriers with double purpose 5" or 4" guns, enough armor to resist the same caliber and some torpedo protection, usually level 2. Unless they're early CVLs or rebuilds, they always carry 100 planes. I see no reason to go for a different number. The displace around 30.000 tons, with a speed of ~30. The intent is to be able to fend off small ships, like DDs or crappy CLs, and be able to survive a lucky torpedo hit. The AI is pretty incompetent in carrier warfare, so I don't find their aircraft a big threat. I get enough fighters to have a decent CAP (ground.based aircraft can sometimes be a bigger problem) and pack as many TBs and DBs as I can. Planes absolutely destroy anything in their path. With bad weather or an unlucky starting hour, yes, they're useless. Time to retreat then. But when you get the appropriate fleet battle (and with time, you'll end up getting it) you can sink to the bottom of the ocean half of the enemy's fleet. In my current CSA playthrough (fleet size large) I sank 3 BBs and 6 BCs in one battle, with three CVs ( about 200 ac total since two were reconversions). It left the USA crippled and I blockaded them for the rest of the war.
