Took a quick look at San Diego. She's far to big a ship to draw with the virtual shipyard (limited to about 790ft). One thing stood out before I tried. The block coefficient is far to high. I'm thinking even a merchant packet wouldn't be that high. Dunno if the dimensions you've used are the historical ones, I suspect not, because the length/beam ratio is rather destroyer-like. Once again, the secondaries would have been QF (quick firing) rather than BLR (breech loading rifles). She needs a tertiary battery and her torpedoes are rather short and light. Speaking of torpedoes, turn 'em 90 degrees. Edit: Here is a quick mod of San Diego. FYI the deck was ridiculously thick...the same as the belt. Dropping it to 8" (still far thicker than ANY ship of her day) gives the drop is displacement to reduce the block coefficient. Diego mod 1.sship (1.12 KB) Cheers Bruce

Here is another design that actually was produced in May of 1915 - www.shipscribe.com/styles/S-584/images/s-file/s584072.jpg
This was never built, for obvious reasons. I think the freeboard is too low, I might modify that later. Possibly one of you artists can produce a drawing maybe DesignShip also. Hmmm
Ok, here is my try: (I should rebuild her a bit due to redactor restrictions and its impossibility to create casemates, so now she may be treated as "modernised in late 20th"; after modernisation she has 6" in 2-gun turrets, and hyperboloid masts were deconstructed, also I added seaplane catapult) And Shipdesign treated her displacement as "illegal"

The dimensions are exactly the same as the drawing. I should have researched some more the representative deck armor. As to the secondaries, the drawing states 20 x 6 in BLR which is breech loading rifles. I didn't add the tertiary, 4 x 3 inch guns. It doesn't change anything.

Thnks very much.

Yeah I had another look at the drawing after I posted. The official designation of the secondaries may have been BLR, but in springsharp terms they are still QF guns imo. Cheers Bruce

Cheers Bruce Based upon research at Navweaps, the secondary guns on this era ship would have been 5in 51 cal using bag ammunition. They are therefore breech loading guns, not quick firing. However, your reference to Springsharp made me research the manual and your point is probably correct. I just went by the drawing which is a very preliminary proposed design, weapons would have been decided if the design was accepted. I've changed my design and now the guns are 5in 51 with about 240 rounds per gun.

After researching in two naval firepower books of mine and NavWeaps, I've modified my US River class scout cruisers. I've changed the main armament to reflect my latest information. Her LtoB is now within an acceptable range for such a ship, main armament is 5in 51 with 250 rounds. Extended range at 10 knots is 10,000 miles and she is now designed for 33 knots. Her accommodations are now excellent for long voyages which to me is vital and she is still a good seaboat for bad weather. She now has torpedoes, in rotating mounts with 3in guns also. Her displacement is now 9,901. Also changed distribution of single 5in gun turrets.
