v1.06:
I've got a BB with 14" -1 guns. My current 14" tech is level 0. When I do an "Open Design" to design a follow-on class, the other tech is updated but the gun quality remains the same. This has burned me several times where I forget to upgrade gun quality....
I think one or both of the following two things should happen:
1) "Open Design" should bring up guns at their current quality level. 2) "Check Design" should check for highest gun quality available in the same way it checks for TPS, secondary fire control, etc.

Currently Gun quality must be manually upgraded. You do this by switching the gun caliber up or down and then switch back to the original.
The process isn’t automatic since gun refit can take a bit longer and is more costly than standard refits.(historically, depending on the gun a new turret might be needed)

Correct - I meant to explicitly mention (but forgot) to say I was NOT talking about "Open Design for Rebuild". As Mycophobia points out, the rebuild version should not automatically update the guns (in the same way it doesn't automatically change anything else). Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification, in that case I agree with OP that it should automatically change since it does not in of itself affect the prototype discount with designing class similar to existing ones. If there is some effect I am not aware of, a warning that "gun quality not the best it can be" could also work.

i mentioned this problem before - also if you open a design from a previous save and the gun quality is better, the design keeps that better gun if you save and build that design, even if you haven't researched that gun size at all
