I have this and RTW and love the concept of the game.
The problem I'm having at the moment since 1.04 is that ships that are tasked to screen my Capital ships aren't screening them at all.
They are always on the unengaged side of my Capitals and never seem to intercept incoming destroyers.
I always make my Destroyers one of three types. ASW, MCMV or screening DD's. Whilst the ASW and MCMV classes have enough on them to screen.
The Squadrons are set to screen in either line ahead or abreast depending on where the threat is, and I have them under ai control.
I really don't want to micromanage every squadron as I play with the biggest fleet size.
Perhaps I'm missing something here?
Many Thanks
Fred

I think you're right. I've noticed screening DD's will act like scared little girls and get behind your capital ship instead of holding their position and properly screening you.

A common tactic of mine is to arrange all my destroyer flotillas in a long line between their charges and the enemy, to set each division to 'core' and to operate this destroyer line as a second battle line, controlling only the first division manually.

I think you're right. I've noticed screening DD's will act like scared little girls and get behind your capital ship instead of holding their position and properly screening you. I think there's a bug (that I haven't logged yet) in the DD screen order when the target is going faster than cruise (16kt) speed. What I observe is that the DD are correctly in a modified "V" formation, but the tip of the V doesn't go fast enough to catch of with the flag of the screened division, and so falls (often far) behind. Sometimes this is because weather is limiting ship speed - big ships are less limited than small, so often your BB will have a 1kt advantage over the DD screen and can run away like this. I suspect, but am not sure, that this doesn't just happen in limiting weather though. This is in contrast to "support" DD divisions, which should form a line on the far side (away from the enemy) of the ship being supported. This sounds much more like the behavior that the OP described, and is WAD.

I suspect the DDs do that to avoid a "ships fouling the range" penalty for the BB gunnery. I think I'd usually rather have a few DDs fouling the range than leave my BBs open, though.

1) You have "fleet tactics - Destroyer Screen" researched? The option shouldnt show up otherwise, IIRC, but you never know ... 2) You checked that the DD div actually has the BB div as lead div - even after you noticed them leaving their intended position? 3) You checked that your DD line really/still had the order "screen"? It seems sometimes the div orders do get reset, but I havent figured out when, or if this might be intentional ... . 4) What about writing a bug report, including the save and some screenshots?

Who are you replying to? Me? If so: 1-3) Yes I've got everything configured properly; the DD just drift behind. And not that they're not really "leaving their intended position", it's more that they drift away from it. 3) There's a bug where sometimes when a damaged ship enters port all your other extra divisions appear to get a "run away" flag set that clears their orders and sends them back to port. There's also an issue where if you have two core divisions targeting the same lead divisions, one of them will clear its orders. Recently I've seen warnings about this, but it didn't used to warn and I don't know if even now it warns in all cases. 4) You may have noticed I generate a *LOT* of bug reports - I'm a firm believer in "they can't fix it if we don't report it". At some point if I think of it I may do so, but I would want to first confirm that what I'm seeing isn't simply me not noticing the differential "speed limited by weather" effect (where DD max is slower than e.g. BB max). Given the bandwidth that Fredrik appears to have even for things that should be straightforward to fix, this is subtle enough that I doubt it would be addressed any time soon, so I'm not in a great hurry.... (note, that was NOT a criticism, merely an observation - I think it's great that they are continuing to improve the product after shipment, which is actually why I make the effort to log bugs).
