Would like to - use e.g. an own Iltis class gun boat design in every new German game right from the beginning or even
- edit the legacy fleet data so that every new game it is a bit more in accordance with the real German ship list of the years 1900/1901.
(How) is that possible?

One thing that I'd like to see is an option where every nation gets to start with its historical fleet from 1900. The stock legacy ship designs make the early game a little repetitive, and all of the necessary classes already exist thanks to RJW and SAI.

Here is something you can try. If you go to the saves folder and select the game folder that corresponds to your name, you'll see a ton of files with extensions like "CLASSNAME.##d". Look for the ones corresponding to your ship's name and copy them out before the file gets wiped. Then try copying them back into another game. No promises this will work, though as I haven't tested it myself yet. The first # corresponds to the save game folder/slot, not sure what the second one corresponds to. On further consideration, the second number seems to correspond to nation, with the player nation being 0.

Thanks galagalaxian! I tried it but it doesn't seem to work. Strangely enough another idea doesn't work for me either: I tried to load the file you mentioned by the "Open existing design" option under "ship design", from there I moved to my Iltis file in game 1. That should normaly be the simplest way since it would allow for easy access not only to older RTW designs but also to older SAI and RJW designs! Any chance of such an option in the future?

Edit: After implementing Iltis in the ship names file I had access to viewing the relevant file in game 1/ save but was unable to open it. Instead I received the message "...No sneaky spying..." Okay, now I'm slowly starting to understand that my thoughts might bring the idea behind the game into some sort of trouble but nevertheless there should perhaps be a simple solution for using pure 1900 designs of your older RTW games in new RTW games without being forced to design them again and again and again.

In a wider sense, I'd like to be able to import ship designs for the AI, either my own or from other players. Whenever I read the ship design thread I keep thinking "My ships could beat that", but I never get to prove it. A lot of the successful designs are creations of circumstance, of course (treaties etc.), but it would be nice to build an absolute killer fleet one game and then find yourself forced to come up with designs that can beat them in the next game.

... As you can see by my repeated posts concerning that matter, I'm currently "obsessed" by solving this "lost early gun boats problem". Another idea: Wouldn't it be possible for a future update to save campaigns at a certain early date (eg. June 1900), when you have implemented all specific amendments (e.g. scraped unhistoric ships, designed and ordered historic new ones) - but without necessarily overwriting them later? In SAI campaigns i liked the feature that it was always possible to return to such an early campaign status at a later date, but now RTW seems to overwrite such early files by the following saved files ...

I guess one option is to simply copy your design files by hand regularly and keep them catalogued in your own folder!

... Don't ask me why, but after I lost my first campaign, the Kaiser went to exile and I started with a new game 1 it's suddenly working. All I did was - to place the gunboat Iltis file in a "my ships Folder,
- rename the file to Iltis 20.de,
- Change (redate) the 2 relevant (building) dates within the file
- write and save the name in the ship names file
- choose the file under "new ship design" when starting the new campaign
- ordering all 6 historic Iltis class gun boats.
Now they are in colonial service again.
