I don't know if you're aware of this, but in RTW2 Aircraft Carriers with Air Capacity of over 100 suffer from an aircraft handling penalty. So slower spotting, launching and so forth. And sadly no, I don't know if it's a flat penalty once you cross that threshold or a percentage based on how many more than a hundred you have. How have you found CV with no AA defenses though? While I have found that deck armor is unnecessary due to the AI being generally unable to concentrate enough attack power at once to seriously overwhelm the CAP and task force AA, going with no heavy AA defense seems one extra saving too much for me. I haven't seen the penalty as yet, so I don't know what it is. The wider the beam on the carrier, the wider the deck so that makes aircraft handling easier but I don't know if the game represents that. I will have to see. I have had any problems with air defenses yet, probably because I am currently the Japanese and the opponents don't have many carriers in that area. I believe that good well equipped escorts are better. I would like to build an AA cruiser.

My next game as Japan is going so-so, the Prime Minister is being a PIB, but no matter. I had a war with the Soviets and in my first battle I sank two battle-cruisers, one destroyer and fourteen transports. They gave up immediately after that. Very quick war. I am now installing diesels in my corvettes, just for testing.

I am moving my testing to Germany. I am doing this because Germany is a land based power and that is completely different from Japan. Now, the two areas that she needs to protect are the Baltic and the North Sea coupled with the Skagerrak passage from the North Sea to the Baltic. She also has Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union as possible adversaries.
I am going to initially build air bases in East Prussia along with building MTB's. These would be good in the small Baltic. Hopefully some of my minelaying subs and coastal subs will be sent there and this should give me good coverage.
As to ship building, cramped ships for Germany probably are not as important as the main bases at Wilhelmshaven and Kiel are close. I will build corvettes, heavy cruisers and update my battleships.
I will, refuse to fight in fleet battles using guerre de course as my primary tool for winning wars. I hasn't failed my yet. It works well.

My game as Germany did not go too well. Within two years, I had to fight Britain twice. Now, Germany is landlocked in time of war. The computer continues to put German cruisers off the west coast of France and then in the Irish Sea. How did that happen. In WW1, the German were 1 win, 3 losses and tied one. (Jutland, which I believe they actually won). In WW2, the Germans had only a couple of minor battles including the Battle of the Denmarck Straits and Narvik. Big deal, nothing really was satisfied.
The only strategy that would seem to make sense is trade warfare using raiders and submarines. After one losing war, I took my all my heavy cruisers and the other large surface ships and made them raiders. They averaged over 10 British Merchant vessels per month. My subs did well, but I did have enough.
I believe that if I start building submarine, lots of them, and not waste money on battleships and battle-cruisers I might do better. The problem is I have to fight fleet battle after fleet battle constantly along with other ridiculous battles near the German coast.
I did build airfields in Germany and East Prussia. They did well.
I am not sure about my strategy in the new game but I am tired of all the battles. I don't mind losing battles and wars, but I would like a fighting chance. I actually do pretty well 90% of time. Oh, well, back to the drawing board.

MEMORANDUM
TO: Admiral Doenitz
From: Admiral Oldpop
Subject: German Navy and the Allies
You were correct, Admiral. You wanted more submarines to fight a trade war and no one listened. Well, Admiral, the old man listened.
It is 1939, and I am in a war with Great Britain and France. I reached a frustration level because the AI keeps putting my ships off the coast of France and in the English Channel, so I scrapped my battleships and carriers along with heavy cruisers. I turned all my light cruisers into raiders and built more submarines. I had about 48 submarines along with raiders and built two AMC's.
I whipped them both. The British ran out of food and had riots. They asked for an armistice and the French had the same issue. It worked Admiral.
For Germany, we will not build battleships after 1920 or battlecruisers. No large aircraft carriers, possibly not any light carriers. Seaplane carriers could be useful. Build over 50 submarines including minelayers. Use the light cruisers after rebuilding, as raiders. I also will build MTB's for the Baltic and equip my airfields with medium bombers, dive bombers and maybe some torpedo bombers. I focus my research in those areas.
When building new ships, emphasis should be on speed and not armor. We are not going to fight naval battles. We will ruin their economies and drive them crazy. Our ships need speed, range, and firepower in the area of torpedoes and possibly some mines.
Does this strategy work? I've used it with the Japanese and have defeated Russia, France, Britain all, with this guerre de course. Alfred Thayer Mahan did not know what he was talking about. The Japanese should have listened to you, Admiral Doenitz and used their submarines in a trade war on their opponents.
Thanks, Admiral Doenitz. lo! to the world who tries to come after me again.
Admiral Oldpop

Here is my latest heavy cruiser design, to be used as a raider. What is unique? It is diesel powered. I will add magazine box and inclined later along with increased ammunition.

Well the game is over. The interesting history is the ship losses. I lost 14 Aux, 24 subs, 6 CA, 1 CVL, 11 CL and 9 destroyers.
The English lost 104 aux, France lost 25 and the Soviet Union lost 87. That is 216. The Soviets also lost 14 other ships.
I am very satisfied because I did not start my new conops idea until later in the game.

View AttachmentView AttachmentIf you use diesel powered engines I suggest to think about long range as it costs minimum tonnage. Even extra long range seems be reasonable.

That game is over and I didn't have time to build another cruiser with that range increase. I will because it is a good idea for raiders. Thanks.

Well, I am back at it, playing Japan in a virtual desktop. I am using a different submarine strategy. I am going to deploy them in support of fleet operations. We will see how that helps. It did not help the Japanese although they were able to get the Wasp and Yorktown. I am also rebuilding my armored cruisers. I will deploy them as raiders to after they are rebuilt, they will go into mothballs. The ships that have limited range and cramped will be scrapped. Anyway, stay tuned, more at a 11:00 o'clock.
Another procedure that I am testing is too slow down to cruising speed when near my bombardment target, I don't know how to check on my hits, but I can't believe that it won't be more effective. A little more dangerous but that is naval combat.

With my strategy of trade war using submarines and surface ships, why not build a long range pocket battleships. So, here it is.

Well, I've just finish a war... a long war with both France and the Soviet Union. My concept of operations using raiders and submarines is highly effective. I won the war. Even if I had a bad battle result, I quickly replaced those points lost with sinking's.
My new heavy cruiser... a pocket battleship is very effective. I have a new design using 10 inch guns, 8 x 6 inch guns and two x four torpedo launchers, port and starboard midship plus two floatplanes. I place endurance and speed as the priority considering the type of ships they will be facing. I am striving to get at least six built before the war starts, but that isn't always possible.
I build many corvettes for trade protection to release my destroyers. It's a real battle to keep up but it is effective.
One type of battle to avoid, is the bombardment mission with destroyers. Their guns are too small and I have to get too close. Usually its a setup, the enemy will now have aircraft and possibly a lurking cruiser so I don't fight them. I will race toward the target and then order the mission scrubbed and return the ships to base. Works very well.
After the Japanese game I am moving to Italy and France, then to the Soviet Union.

I have some areas of the game play to work on and those are 1. Paying more attention to messages, all of them, and compiling the stats. The latter is important for the future of the game. I have to slow down my game play, not hurry. I can run the game in background and then move on to other chores at home. Aircraft performance requirements are not a problem for me, but I want to fine tune my ship building.

Ok, I finished my latest game with Japan. I fought four wars, and the last was against the US. I cleaned their clocks in two months. Wow. Here is my last carrier specification - Its capable of carrying 88 aircraft

Well, I started a new game as Italy in 1920. Proverbial problem with Italy.... no funding. I am probably going to scrap a lot of old ships and mothball some of the other older ones. After that I will get more corvettes, and submarines buil to give me a chance. I just have to stay out of wars for a while.
