When scout aircraft are launched, they are already given a number (scout 1, scout 2 and so on). However, when you zoom in on them, you only see the number and type of aircraft, and the mission. My suggestion is to make those IDs visible on the map (possibly also add a way to jump the camera to whichever scout generated a report). Also, give similar IDs to squadrons, either on launch, or on the strategic map.
If on launch, give it a simple ID ("Strike 1," "Escort 3," etc). This would be visible from the moment the strike was ordered to ready to the moment it finished striking below, on the strike screen, the air formations screen, the main tactical map and in "strike approaching target" or air combat notifications.
If on the strategic map (obviously more complex, but also, in my opinion, more rewarding), a squadron might be given a name (say, 617 squadron, because I'm British ). This name would remain with that squadron from the moment it was created, through battles, through transfers between bases/ships, to the point it was disbanded.
In combat, the squadron will almost certainly be broken up into smaller flights (whether because of damage, losses, or just because you don't want to use all of your planes to sink one merchant). In this case, the flights would still be identified as part of 617 squadron, but would be given their own unique identifier for the duration of that battle (say, 617/1, 617/2, etc).
