I'm trying to edit the save file to unlock every tech in 1900 (because who doesn't like to completely crush the AI occasionally? ). I've managed to work out how to unlock individual techs on my own, but I'm struggling to work out how to unlock new tech branches, like shipboard aircraft operations.

Ok, I'm assuming no-one knows the answer to my original question. New, related question: Do you have to fund research to unlock new tech areas, or do they just automatically unlock at a certain date or after certain criteria are met?

I'm not sure why techs unlock at a specific date or the mechanism involved in getting them to unlock. But it would be nice to have super carriers in 1903 for testing purposes...

Sorry for being late, this one is easy. You need to go into your .bcs savegame file and edit
ResearchXLevelX=0
to
ResearchXLevelX=1
When I do this I check how many levels that specific tech area has to not put in a '1' where there is no tech.
To get planes however you need to edit the
[AircraftTypes]
section and copy paste in late designs from another late game save. Be careful to adapt the ATX numbers to strat from '0'.

Yes, as I said, I know how to unlock individual techs. What I was asking was how to unlock tech areas that aren't available at the start of the game (ie "new tech area discovered: Naval Aviation: Lighter Than Air" messages).

You can however still change the year unlocks for those techs

You canuse the techs, just not see the tech/research areas in the research screen before they are unlocked.
