Ladies, gentlemen and fellow forum lurkers, I am happy to announce that two of the four Imperial Japanese carriers that were lost at Midway have been found. RV Petrel has announced the finding of Kaga, as well as a second as-of-yet unidentified carrier believed to be either Soryu or Akagi. A confirmation is expected within in the next 24 hours.
IJN or HIJMS Akagi
IJN or HIJMS Kaga
IJN or HIJMS Soryu

Kaga's position at the time of scuttling was 28 degrees- 50 min.N and 179 degrees-50' W Nagumo reported Kaga was finished at 1800 hrs. VMSB-241 from Midway went to find her but at 2115 hrs. the Kaga had sunk. Here is approximately where she should have been, bearing in mind ocean drift and moving after sinking. Midway is to the south east. She would have drifted eastward on the north east current. In fact, that is where she probably was. Just my guess.

The found unconfirmed name wreck is 260 metres long so it can only be Akagi.

I would have thought Kaga would have settled in two pieces, considering she burned nearly in half to the water-line. She must have had a strong keel if it stayed together on the long drift down.

Guess that is a (admittedly not too helpful) advantage of having been converted from a battleship.

Is there a host of anime characters converting it into the Space Battlecarrier Kaga?

Is there a host of anime characters converting it into the Space Battlecarrier Kaga? There aren't that many battleships or battlecruisers (or former ones) that sank more or less intact so I guess if we ever need one that would be a candidate. Too bad they had an equipment failure and had to call off the search early. No film of Akagi until they can go back out probably next year. Hopefully they can find Soryu and Hiryu as well.

Most sunken capital ships tend to capsize. The exceptions (like 'Bismarck') are the ones that fill with water first. This is the reason 'Titanic's bow is more intact than the stern - the latter still had air-filled compartments which imploded on the way down.
