Having an absolutely amazing time playing the game and have just about go to having some decent CV and BB designs as Britain.
I am having some small confusion in that gun pen measurements are all in yards but the distance measure tool on the in game map are in nautical miles.
I'd love to know how far to sit away from an enemy ship to minimise penetrations.
Is there something I'm missing or is it designed to be like this with me doing quick conversions in my head?

Welcome aboard, astewart1802 . You can see the distance in yards to the currently targeted ship when you hover your mouse pointer over a ship on the battle map. This info is also available under the Details button for rate of fire on the ship details screen. When you use the target selection button (looks like a tiny bulls eye) it will show you the distance in yards to every available target.

That's amazing. Thank you very much for clarifying that. Seems so simple now

Also, a nautical mile is approximately 2,000 yards (2025.37, if you want to be exact), so you can fairly easily estimate the range in yards if you know the range in nautical miles.

That's a useful tip. I'd been doing 1 mile =~ 1700 yards which is way off the money

You can double click on the map. That will bring up a cross. If you then move the mouse cursor around, you can see the distance from the cross to the mouse cursor in the lower right panel under the map, in both yards and nm.
