The Japanese know of no such button!
Edit: oh, you’re not using the French UI, are you?

didamigo - no, there is not such a command. You will have to 'conduct a managed withdrawal', 'advance to the rear', ;abandon the pursuit' or 'open the range to the horizon' on your own.

Admiral Beatty beating feet, running from the German Fleet Admiral Scheer steering rear, get home quick the Grand Fleet are here! Beatty's withdrawal was actually part of Jellicoe's plan. Beatty would engage the German scout force then turn and head towards the Grand Fleet where Jellicoe would be deployed to destroy the German High Seas Fleet. The plan actually worked, twice. But the German's were craftier than Jellicoe had imagined. In my fleet battles, I use the same technique. As soon as the enemy battle fleet is located, my light cruiser scouting force does a 180 degree turn and races back to the main force. Works pretty well everytime.

The Japanese know of no such button! Edit: oh, you’re not using the French UI, are you? Oh yes they did, but it didn't work because they performed the maneuver generally too late. However, what we would consider a turn away was in fact just part of the planned operation such as at Savo Island and Guadalcanal.

There is a withdraw button in the OOB, right click on the main force and status or something, can't exactly check it right now. Either way, look for a white flag icon.

I am in the same position, no game now so I couldn't remember the exact words. I used it all the time after a torpedo attack, I then order a withdrawal.

If you mean the black flag icon in division status screen, that's the exact opposite of retreating. What you want is "detach" after right clicking. Though it tends to not work as intedned, so use at own risk.

I've been aware of that button for years (it was also in RTW1), yet I have never pushed it. Does anything unusual happen when you issue a disengage order (other than, you know, disengaging)? For instance, do ships that are within range of the enemy stop firing? Do ships under player control disregard player-issued orders and turn away from the enemy? What happens if you issue a disengage order and then change your mind? Can you toggle off the order with the same button? I guess I should just push that button sometime.

I used it exactly once, waaaaay back, and was so unimpressed with the results that I never pressed it again. I seem to recall my fleet scattering undesirably and taking losses it shouldn't have, though I can't claim to remember it precisely.

Well that's a menu I've never stumbled upon. Good to know it's there, whatever it does.

The most useful button there, for me playing at rear admiral level, is the change lead division button. This can save your bacon if all the ships in your flagship division get damaged. I imagine that battle turn away would be useful playing at Admiral level, though I've never felt the need as rear admiral. The flotilla attack button ostensibly will launch your destroyer flotillas in a torpedo attack against the enemy line but the results tend to be uneven. I still use it, hoping that it will improve torpedo attacks. I've never really noticed any effect from force fatigue, but that might be because I'm not looking.
