Sometimes I lose control of ships to the AI mid battle, why is this?
I understand the pick up survivors event for destroyers, but this is not related to that. I just lost control of half of my destroyers and my armored cruisers to the AI with no means of getting them back, this was just before I spotted the enemy. (after some searching and getting blue text with headings for enemy ships)
Did I miss some setting or is this intended?
The end result is catastrophic, my CAs are probably going to die due to idiotic AI maneuvering and my battleships just lost most of their screening forces to the AI that drives off with them in all directions...

If you're playing on Rear Admiral mode, be aware that your ships need to be within sight of the flagship to receive orders, and bad weather conditions, smoke, battle damage (in particular bridge/conning tower hits), and darkness can interfere with that even when ships are notionally within sight of one another. Your ships can also suffer from signalling errors, the frequency of which correlates to your level of Fleet Tactics research and also, I believe, to crew experience, which may send them out of your control, usually temporarily. Additionally, ships may occasionally detach themselves to engage a nearby opponent.
Also, always remember that you can turn your own battle line into a chaotic mess even when none of your signals goes astray if you try to make too many significant changes of course and speed in too short a span of time, and if you're managing a lot of divisions by yourself then it's easy enough to forget one or two of them, or to mis-time the orders you need to give them to keep them in an appropriate position. This can relatively easily lead to ships losing contact with the flagship, especially with faster vessels in poor visibility conditions.

tip: Bring your flagship squadron down 1-2 knots as this helps folks stay in formation.
As for squads getting confused by signals that is part of the historical realism like at Jutland in WW 1. As your "fleet tactics" research improves the chance of it happening goes down.

Thanks, I have had this happen multiple times and I think what happened is the enemy fleet killing small ships from my side that I could not see. This seem to prompt the rescue missions with the AI taking control and running straight into the night and enemy fleet without me being able to control them. However, I only got the question for a few destroyers, does not explain how my heavy cruisers got hijacked.

I have never seen it ask for heavy cruisers either. I lost control of around 8-10 destroyers and 4 heavy cruisers unless I remember wrong.

If it's night time, you have a chance for the ship to lose contact with the division and wander off, usually in the direction of the enemy for whatever reason.

If it's night time, you have a chance for the ship to lose contact with the division and wander off, usually in the direction of the enemy for whatever reason. It was actually night time, perhaps this is what happened. But I play with the setting to control all ships, and I could control other ships that where separated? Then again, I can definetly imagine that such an event could fire making me lose control of certain ships. And yes, some of them sailed headlong into the enemy formation and died in a fire...

It would really help if you ... - could supply some screenshots - some copies of the event log (better) - savegames (best) ... so we can actually look at what is happening instead guessing what you mean by "losing control".

Ill be sure to do that next time it happens, it has not happened now for a while, but it might be related to night missions.

Dooh, I just realized I was playing version 1.0 and that version 1.12 is available. I did not realize I had to update manually when downloading the game after buying it. I have now updated to 1.12, but the above issues I have described could be caused by any number of old bugs that might be fixed already. Ill write again if the issue appears again. By the way, I hope 1.12 is the latest version, if not, please let me know
