Time And time again i se my ships wasting ammunition on disabled and sinking ships, when I try to set division target they ignore my order and keep firing on the sinking ship anyway. While my ships preoccupied firing at the obviously sinking irresistible-class the two other BB's fire at my BB's undisturbed and inflict some great damage. Is it possible to stop this behavior, or do this thread belong in the suggestions forum?

I think the urge to shoot at a dead target was simply irresistible... Pun aside, you can set division targets in RA and even individual ship targets in Captain’s mode. If you want the AI targeting to change, that would be Suggestions.

Historically, ships often concentrated on nearby disabled targets instead of more distant and possibly more important targets. See Blücher or Wiesbaden for example. It is also not so easy to determine when an enemy ship is really sinking and no threat or when it is dangerous, se Luca Tarigo for example.

It is also not so easy to determine when an enemy ship is really sinking and no threat or when it is dangerous, se Luca Tarigo for example. Blücher isn't a great example as it was more a case of misinterpreted orders from the flag than what the ships in question would have done without orders. But the point of it not always being easy to tell when an enemy ship is doomed is certainly true. On more than one occasion I've left behind an enemy vessel that I judged wouldn't make it back, only to have it still unsunk at the end of the battle.

You did say they were the 'Irresistable' class - clearly the urge to shoot at them cannot be resisted!
I'd love to see the 'Cease Fire' button expanded to all ships, and on a per-ship basis to be able to shut down mains, secondary/tertiaries, or both.

I have long wanted a Cease Fire button, or better being able to draw an 'exclusion box' on a map area into which your ships would no longer accept targets. ...HOWEVER. I just now literally stubbed my virtual toe on an example that proves the rule. I had 2 BBs 2 BCs and 3 Bs trying to pummel 2 BBs and 2 CAs out of existence. 1 BB was left stationary and listed as "5 knots On Fire and Sinking", so I drove away from it and chased down the other 3. Which BB survived? The one I left behind. %*#&#@$!

I know what you mean, I like to hit them with a couple of torpedoes before leaving if practical, but when your torpedo gunners can't work out the solution...

I understand that judging when a ship is sinking is very difficult, but in the example i provided in the first post, the BB that is targeted by my BB's are a floating wreck all main turrets destroyed, what captain in his right mind would keep firing at that wreck when two other BB's are sending 15 and 16 inch shells his way and hit his ship, especially when the admiral is giving orders to change target. And this behavior is more like the rule than the exception in the game. I feel that a option to give a order to stop firing at one specific target would not be unrealistic, and if that means there is a risk that that target would survive the encounter, I could live with that For the sake of my argument: Let's imagine the final moments of Bismarck, let's imagine that the Tirpitz would appear and open fire at Rodney, do you think all the british battleships present would only fire at the Bismarck, or do you think that at least some of them would fire back at the Tirpitz

Ships obeying the target command would be a nice start.
'I have told you to stop firing at the dead CL and aim for the very alive BC.'
'lol no'.

Touche'! Alas the decision is not mine to make, and Fredrik has been quite solidly on this point since I started playing 3 1/2 years ago. For starters, A very logical rules amendment suggestion would be necessary I think.

For those of you looking for perfection in naval warfare, find another planet. This one is occupied by humans and they make human errors in judgement based on poor information, poor command and control, poor doctrine or just stupidity. I agree totally with Fredrik. The game should reflect the issue of human errors when possible. It makes for a more realistic game. Just my opinion.

There's replicating the occasional human error and then there's forcing a doctrine of 'Waste all of you ammo on a dead ship while you're getting nuked by something else' on your entire fleet every battle.
Maybe it's something that could diminish as you go on to represent better command, communciation and naval professionalism?

Wars and battles are won by the side who makes the fewest mistakes. They are frequent and sometimes fatal. We only read about the really bad ones, not the incidental ones. Believe me.

There aren't that many examples of ships firing at stricken targets while the fleet Admiral is ordering them to stop.

There aren't that many examples of ships firing at stricken targets while the fleet Admiral is ordering them to stop. That made the history books, mate. Find and read actual AAR and you might get an enlightenment. Firing on disabled ships happened all the time, it was probably not entered into the logs.
