In other threads, we've discussed avionics that are in modern military aircraft, so let's have a thread dedicated to that area. We can discuss any piece of avionics and how it fits into the system, along with a little history of how we arrived where we are in modern avionics.
If you do want to discuss something, have a question about something you've read about, this is the place to start. BTW, this discussion of avionics or aircraft electronics will include computers; both analog and digital.

What exactly does "avionics" encompass?
My layman´s understanding would say "The pilot moves the stick, the aircraft performs the desired maneuver; every system connecting these two steps is avionics".

What exactly does "avionics" encompass? My layman´s understanding would say "The pilot moves the stick, the aircraft performs the desired maneuver; every system connecting these two steps is avionics". Simply, avionics is a shortened version of aviation electronics. Any system or component that is electronic, either analog or digital is considered avionics. Generally, motors and such are not considered avionics although that is changing because of the digital electronics that is now connected to these motors to control their operation. As to your definition, if you move the stick, avionics will convert your stick movement to a signal and that will be sent from the computer to the hydraulics to move the necessary controls on the aircraft. You could have digital controls on the hydraulics to control the hydraulic pumps and pressure sensors but the actual pumps are not avionics. Same with pneumatics, avionics or electronics will control the pneumatics, but the actual pumps for gas, are not considered avionics. In actual block diagrams of a system, you will see the pumps represented with the appropriate control signal moving to and from them, but that is to provide a complete system diagram.

So avionics are basically the nervous system of the plane?

So avionics are basically the nervous system of the plane? I would characterize it as more the sensors, brains and nervous system of the aircraft. The hydraulics and pneumatics are the muscles.
