I did upgrade an 1899 destroyer that wasn't cramped. I was able to increase its main guns from 2 inch to 4 inch. That was a surprise. I was able to convert it to oil and increase the speed and improve fire direction. I had to remove midship torpedo tube and put the tubes on the amidships sides. This was a 1901 AH Panther destroyer. I was able to maintain 28 knots, add 2 director positions, improve the director system, and add two single torpedo tubes aft distributed along with converting her to oil. I like the changes and am doing all the ships of this class

Also the idea of building a fleet from the ground up with the idea of retrofitting made me wonder, can you design and build a ship with a configuration that allows cross deck fire (port forward wing, aft starboard wing) before researching the tech and then retrofit it for crossdeck fire when you research the technology?

My longest serving ship was 1899-1946 (when I ended the campaign). It was one of my pre-dreadnoughts that I left on Southeast Asia station. In the end it had something like 5 floatplanes and a bunch of AA. It didn't do a lot because I refitted it at the beginning of every war. I do remember it was the only pre-dreadnought that really survived the first years of my campaign.
