I had this idea to track EVERY ship over the course of a game and record their fate and actions. Part of this is to get past the whole have a ship that performs admirably but ends up getting scrapped and forgotten instead of turned into a museum. This play through will also include a large number of battleships and a handful of carriers until they prove themselves in a battle. This play through will be as the USN since it has been a while since I played and will be a 1900 start with very large fleet size manual build of legacy fleet on. My goal will be to complete 2 years each post outside of war.
The legacy fleet
Now anyone that knows how I play RtW and RtW2 will know that I dislike early game DD's and as such there will be none in the legacy fleet.
Now designs here are also standard for me, although I remember being able to do far better with legacy ships as the US than this but these will work fine. Since we are tracking every ship, there is a nice list of all ships and their status here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-_xS6cQ2hCbRWiUcBuEK-0_hV5s9AwCgYXidEoNfQp8/edit?usp=sharing
So the legacy fleet will be 8 of the Ohio class battleships, 5 of the New York class heavy cruisers and 4 Chicago class light cruisers. Under construction at game start are a further 2 Ohio's, an additional New York and 2 more Chicago's.
With the legacy fleet out of the way, lets look at tensions real quick.
So this is not a bad situation for starting US. Looking for an early war leads us to look toward France, a manageable foe, while having a decent chance of fighting the other major nation, the UK.
The first months
Now the first few months be very active or slow. Sometimes it is nice to go past June 1900 with few to no events, but this time there was NO research during that time either, just a few cases where the scientists are stumped or getting close to tech. July this start to change.
Alright, so right now there are 4 nations all with similar strengths, the UK, the US, Germany and France. While the last option would give some benefits I do not see a good reason to provoke Germany at this moment. The first option is just terrible in this situation, so for now the status quo wins.
Well the scientists are active, not what we need but it is at least something.
Moving on to the end of the first year, not much has happened since July, a couple techs, some budget increases and no ships have been laid down since March. Now Japan stands to gain from this event, but while I have not mentioned tech focuses, some of the research fields Japan does great in, like torpedoes, are turned down to allow for more efficient tech for larger ships. So while Japan stands to gain, so does the US, also tensions are low with Japan so no worries here.
November was also a good month of the scientists as well. Several new techs are developed, not enough to justify new ship designs but it is a start at least.
1901: Ships, tech and tension
So 1901 opens with a new ship design. The final 2 Ohio class ships are almost complete and so it is time to work on a new design to not have an slow downs in capital ship construction. Since there are no gun improvements or major fire control improvements, the armament is the same as the Ohio class. With the new docks that we have, we can fit more armor and shells on board. Those torpedo tubes we used to have take up space that could be used for more reliable engines and also could be a hazard during war so they are gone, otherwise not much else has changed in order to save money.
So this is always a great event. Backing the ally increases tensions randomly, and prestige is lost for the other options. This is a chance to get a treaty, but that will be a potent treaty if it does come and we just designed a new battleship, so no thank you. I guess we roll the dice and get some extra cash as well.
In March the new battleships are laid down and the Ohio's enter the fleet. In March another Chicago class cruiser is laid down as well as 2 New York class cruisers.
Well, RNG has blessed us here. I already planned to fight France and now I can get paid for more tensions, yes please. While they could make a decent ally, they do have some holdings that look ripe for the taking.
Well, we do not have DD's at all yet, and 500 ton models are very bad. While an extra 100 tons can help, the ships still have a poor value, but we need this tech.
Now that we have 600 ton DD tech we might as well get something into the fleet. Now I would prefer something with some solid speed and a good punch, but we need better tech for that. Again I could have sworn I could get more out of a 600 ton DD in 1901 before but oh well.
Really RNG, this event? At least it is not the UK, but I will not lose prestige at this point so tension with Germany it is.
So tech is getting places again. This will go nicely with the new docks we are working on right now.
Now I know I said 2 years per post earlier and this one says 1902, but I got a little carried away during this session. Now that we have a chance for more tension with France, there is no reason not to take it, still would like that war.
Our spies are doing alright. If this is the best that Japan has then they are not a threat, have to love AI designs sometimes.
Ok, new guns. These are likely to be equivalent to what we have but we have them now. 13 inch guns are not bad, if they are -1 or better.
Really Italy? You could have just asked to buy it from us instead of stealing it. Instead of risking your destruction, you could have paid for it, tensions are low enough.
Now this is a good case where the tension hit is worth it, but I do not want to fight everyone at once since tensions are raising. The good news about this one is that there is no real downside to the second option that it warns you of at least.
Really sir? Russia? I thought we agreed on France. Oh well, I guess I will agree, no need to take a hit against a nation that stands no chance.
Seeing as though we are now 3 years into this game, this seems like a good place to end the session.
Tension is getting up there. While war has not broken out yet, it will soon enough. The issue I have with this is that almost every nation is upset in some way, except Japan. I guess the goal for the next few years will be to iron out some of the wrinkles from the first 3 years and target France as well as Russia. The fleet is doing good as well, 10 battleships, 6 heavy cruisers, 8 light cruisers and 12 destroyers are in service with 2 battleships, heavy cruisers and light cruisers on the way and a large number of additional destroyers.
