The Austrian ship was no doubt hampered in its maneuverability by the extra 400 pounds of bronze it took to craft her name-plate. *nods sagely* ^ early contender for Post of the Year, right there.

LOL, guess your saboteurs decided to go for the softer target. I seem to recall someone posted a while back something along those same lines where they got a message stating they sank a garbage lighter (barge).
I actually had an event a couple of games back where I went to war with someone because they blew up one of my 200 ton minesweepers. "Remember the Ortolan!"

What if it actually was an accident and they just decided to take credit?

If you are asking me, then I would say a lot of their little ones and zeros died because of their AI's megalomania, haha. In your case I would say you need better agents and it's good that the Brits actually think it was an accident. Not that the Royal Navy is invincible within the game's format or anything.

My latest game a rebellion broke out from June 1914 to April 1915 with Australia successfully declaring it's independence from Great Britain. Forward to December 1916, the Royal Navy commissions the 35,200 ton battlecruiser HMS Australia, namesake for a class of three ships. If I do my math right then she was laid down either in June 1914 or some few months before that depending on unforeseen delays but still, it seems pretty ungrateful for the Australians to rebel when they just had a huge battlecruiser named after their colony. Maybe they were insulted that she looks like a big glass cannon on paper. Twelve 16 inch guns in four non super-firing turrets and only 8.5 inches of belt armor according to the almanac. I was going to save His Majesty the embarrassment of having one of his ships named after a rebellious former colony by going into the save file and renaming her to Malaya but it's the namesake for her class so he might just have to deal with it.

Had a war against UK with GE and felt well prepared;
First battle was directly a fleet battle and I said YES (sir); battle went quite good; my pre-dreadnought fought well, were seriously damaged but the enemy, too, and one of the 2 brandnew dreadnoughts of perfidious Albion was isolated and virtually encircled by 15 - in words FIFTEEN - dds. Several gameturns they drived around the dreadnought like indians over settlers in the Wild West.Ok, it was early in the game, and the dds and the torpedos not yet deadly. Still, I was a little bit disappointed that my dds were only able to produce 1 - in words ONE - torpedo hit. After that I had to retreat since my force was seriously hit and I wanted to avoid losses to secure a first important victory.
my ships were followed by the Brits, they came nearer and nearer and I decided to cross the T to fire back; that worked well ... the enemies big ships retreated and the UK dds came up to stop my Bs ... I turned my ships .. they retreated ... and than BOOM ... BOOM ... BOOM .... 3 Brit DDs - in word THREE - achieved 3 - in words THREE - torpedo hits in 3 - in words THREE - of my Bs and all THREE ships sunk.
Thats what I call effective ...

>.< ...Ouch. That's not even my game, and that hurts.
...and maybe the Australia was commissioned by the Make Australia Free party? "What have the British ever done for us?! ...Roads, education, sanitation,..."

Just had a surprise convoy defense battle. All I have to do here is to prevent the enemy from sinking 2 of my merchants. My light cruiser and destroyer escort repulse the single enemy light cruiser, dealing to it 1019 damage points while taking a total of 72 in return to 2 ships. The enemy retreated, my ships went back to escorting the convoy, and the battle ended. Hooray, victor...
"While retiring from the engagement, TR merchant 1 was torpedoed by a submarine" "While retiring from the engagement, TR Merchant 5 struck a mine"
...Dangit...
