Ah yes, the "sinews of War". The US has to be the best at logistics now and in the past. We have to be the only nation who could bring fresh cake from homes to their sons on Guadalcanal. It actually happened. and sometimes I bet US forces involved would have rather have more bullets and fuel delivered....lol Well, actually it was not the lack of the fuel and ammunition that bothered them, it was the fact that many times the ships were loaded backwards with fuel and bullets loaded first at the ports which put it at the bottom. You had to load bullets and fuel last so they came off first when unloading during the operation. We got that wrong at Guadalcanal at first, and did not have enough time to totally unload before the Japanese showed up. We learned fast. On Guadalcanal, the men lived on Japanese rice, C rations and spam. They also got shell fish from the sound near Lunga Point. My father would not eat rice for the first couple of years, my mother said. Luckily she was Italian, so it was pasta all the way. He also became allergic to shell fish and could not eat it anymore. UPDATE: Two good books on logistics( there are more) "Supplying War" by Martin Van Creveld www.history.army.mil/html/books/030/30-4/index.html - link to Army Historical Center book. It is downloadable in PDF format

I got the book in hard print!!!!!! Logistics isn't exactly the most exciting subject but it is one of the most important. Getting supplies from their source to the front is a complex task and the US is probably along with the Brits, as good as they get.
