The battle AI in RtW1 is just fine. What needs work is the national AI.

Fun fact RE: torpedoes and seaplanes: the second aerial torpedo kill ever involved a seaplane that suffered a degradation in engine power and was forced to land. The pilot spotted an enemy tug, decided to play torpedo boat, taxied up to it and sank it. His plane was then enough lighter that he was able to take off again.
I'd like to be able to include torpedoes on my fighters. I haven't heard of the F4U actually carrying torpedoes, but in principle, on payload weight, it could actually have carried a pair.

In principle, if you lengthened the landing gear by about 30 inches I'd like to see a torp slung under a Corsair with that horrible ground clearance! Though I have too in games been loured by the "added plus" of anti-ship ordnance on fighters. If you have no enemy fighters to face, free strike capability, and if you have to fight just ditch the load. Playing Aces of the Pacific I always included a bomb load-out on my plane, just in case, though that game probably wasn't great at simulating range and engine performance.

Yeah, I was somewhat wondering about the ground clearance.

I think the F6F was one of the few that could carry a torpedo ( although as far as I know it was only a theoretical capability not actually used in combat ). It has 1x Mk13 torpedo listed as a potential loadout, and was tried out as a torpedo bomber in testing/qualifications at least.

Though not thought of as a naval fighter, the FW-190 had a variant that could carry a torpedo.

I just wish the ai battleships would actually hold my battle line and not run off and do their own stuff or they piddle around kilometers behind my lead divsion i just wish we could set the ship ai to “agrressive” maybe make it a training option ?

Generally the 'obedience' of your battle line will improve with advances in the research area of Fleet Tactics.

You are the Admiral you command the ships however the game simulate reality as it was and very successful. You need to realize that at that time it was not easy change course of whole fleet. Right know it is matter of seconds to transfer information from ship to ship but at these time it take minutes as commands need to be transmitted via flags and even that signals was not always recognized correctly. For this reason it often happened some ships going not the way Admiral wanted. Look at Battle of Dogger Bank (you can use wiki) you will find how signals were easily misunderstood and how it can easily influence output of whole battle.

You need to realize that at that time it was not easy change course of whole fleet. He's aware. You are talking to someone who has forgotten more then we've ever known on the subject. Difficult doesn't mean impossible. Look at Jutland where both sides were making very deliberate efforts to commit specific forces in specific attacks.

Your battleline will hold together better if you stay a few knots below your maximum. If you are going max speed, and a following division can't catch up, the AI will tend to do its own thing.
In fleet engagements, I will usually keep my battleline at cruising speed, or just a little faster, until I get to point where I need to chase or run away.

This must be that discipline thing people are always talking about. Never been too good at it myself.

One thing I wish would happen is two AI fighting each other. It would probably make the game much more complex (simulating six "players" per turn vice one) but it would be nice to see.

I would settle for the ability to form my ships into divisions and assign flagships. I grow weary of having to deal with forty divisions of battlecruisers, all out of my control. This. I'm the Grand Admiral for Pete's sake, I should be allowed to tell my ships where to go and what to do when they get there.
