I think common knowledge is that decisive naval battle is battle when one side lost so many ship to continue operation in same scale. It is large tactically victory which is transfer to decisive strategic advantage. However I think there are battles which are not decisive but have same importance but tactically was not decisive. Jutland is perfect example. First of all, thanks for participating because this avenue of exploration is important. Let's try to simplify a little and generalize the definition. See if you agree with this approach. A decisive battle is a battle in which the objectives of the operation were completely achieved. It completely solves the issue or issues over which the battle was fought. We could say that the decisive battle terminates a particular stage of any conflict. It does not end the conflict, it just ends that stage. How do you like that definition? I completely agree with you, your wording is much precise. Checking by some examples in WW2. Battle of Britain was decisive as Luftwaffe was no more able to contest air over Britain. Same is Battle of France as it give control of France to Axis even if it was later invaded by Allies. It is still decisive battle and is go well with your wording. Same works for the Mediterranean as there were no decisive battles as campaign went slowly taking slow advantage by steps. Raid on Taranto was very important for several reasons but not decisive. Midway was decisive battle as stop Japan offensively a put them to defensive. I can see only one other battle which was decisive in Pacific - Guadalcanal.

I read two or three definitions in military documents and came up with this one. Now, we have a reasonable definition, we can begin analyzing which battles were decisive.
Here is my contribution to the list.
Marathon
Salamis
Platea
Lepanto.
Gaugamela
Adrianople
Teutoburger Wald
Hastings
Manzikert
I should let you research and contribute now.

Just make certain that we know the location of the battles. Sometimes the source does not provide that geographic information and it makes it hard to really analyze the importance of such a battle. Why don't you pick one and let's start. We might start with the oldest, but it is of no matter.

Why don't you pick one and let's start. We might start with the oldest, but it is of no matter. I decided to do it a little differently. I will open new thread about my country and show it in large picture with link to at least basic sources to wikipedia as it seems that there is little know about our history and important persons in our history, even one of the greatest generals with innovations ahead of time which are not well known outside our country (if Victoria, Napoleon or Hannibal lived in my small country they will be probably not so well known as there are). Give me a time, I need to think how to write it to have some value. I am not historian so I think I will provide general information with some links and focus on areas I know better. And we can see what you will be interested in. And I think I will add some persons from history out of military branches which I know and could be interesting to know something about them. And usually I try to find more global picture with political, economical consequences and military is just another means of politics. You know it quite well that WW2 was not win by military strategy but by military involvement of USSR and USA (one of them was enough to destroys Nazis because of production power and manpower).
