In the manual it is said that they protect against Raiders and act as convoy escorts.
how do they work against raiders?
if I have a cruiser in the med, and I change him to trade protection, and the enemy has raiders in the indian ocean, will the ship actively hunt these raiders, moving to the Indian Ocean automatically ?
or is it more effective to manually transfer the cruiser to the Indian Ocean, and leave it on active duty?

Manually move a cruiser to the Indian Ocean.
Keep her on active duty.
Ships with long or very long range have a positive modifier to finding a raider.
Make sure she is relatively fast and well armed so she can catch and sink the target.
It it may take awhile and the raider may still avoid detection but hey that's war.

Do ships in AF actually catch raiders anymore like, as I understood, in RTW1?
The description of the new trade protection mission specifically talks about hunting raiders.

I even had raiders intercepting other raiders, so I think the duty setting (other than R and MB) does not massively affect intercept chance.

I'll have to keep an eye on this during my game, cause it would be a really nice thing to know. Would there be any other advantages to cruisers on trade protection, besides raider hunting? Thinking of all those circa 1900-1904 CL's lying around....

Do ships on TP status move between zones? I can't tell from the manual.

It seems like there is some kind of passive effect to trade protection with cruisers, it will occasionslly notify you how a patrolling cruiser thwarted an attack by enemy raider.
That being said, I've definitely intercepted raiders with ships in AF (including in Northern Europe as Japan when closest base was in SEA), but TP might increase the chance.
Also the amount of ships needed for TP depends on number of radiers on the other side.

I find probably reasonable cruiser for UK as trade protection cruiser in 20s and 30s in very large fleet. Designed in 1929.
Dido class - 5600 tons (7000 tons in foreign stations)
Speed: 31 knots
Armament:
3x2x6" Q1 guns with 150 shells per gun
4x4" DP guns 2xtriple torpedo tubes
8 medium AA 8 light AA
Advanced director FC 1 AA director
Armour: 3" belt armour - magazine, 1.5" - machinery - 10 % inclined 1.5" deck armour over magazine, 0.75" deck over machinery 4.5" turret faces, 1.5" turrets top
Immunity zone against own guns: Magazine: over 10250 yards
Turrets: over 8000 yards
Costs: 23.5 M
Maintenance costs: 126k

Fine! This is a excellent project.
But, possibly, is a problem of ship design calculator, because in real history it was impossible to put this components, speed e.t.c. in very modest 5,600 t displacement. HMS Dido had 5,600 t as a standard displacement, but she`s full displacement it was 6,500-7,000 t.

Assuming it isn't a bug that allows it, Trade protection was a good job for all my out of date Battleships

This has no link to real Dido class. This cruiser has only 3x2x6" armament, Dido class was pre-war era design with 10x5.25" DP guns.
In game calculation could not give you exact real history ships. It could be quite close by displacement but never exactly same.
