I’ve got two moments that stick out, although both from older games so details are kinda fuzzy.
One was early on in my very first game, playing as the CSA. I was at war with the US in the Caribbean, and my brand new battleship class was getting into its first battle (either semi-dreads or early dreadnoughts, I can’t remember). The lead ship of the division, CSS Virginia, fired her opening salvo against a scouting US armored cruiser... and not only hit, but got a magazine detonation. Literally the first salvo the ship ever fired in anger sank an enemy ship.
The second was a more recent game as Germany, in the late 30s/early 40s I think (it was a 1900 start, so still Imperial Germany - the fascists had attempted a coup, but the Navy stood with the Kaiser and the coup was unsuccessful). I was at war with the UK. Had a battle defending Iceland from British invasion which went decently well, I sank a CVL and a couple of their battleships for moderate damage and none of my own ships lost. I broke contact and headed back as night fell... only for the Brits to slip past me with their capital ships and invasion transports, which meant I had to fight my way back into my own port and sink the transports. I managed to stave off the invasion and sink a good chunk of the British capital fleet, but my own battle line was gutted in the process, and I couldn’t afford the losses. It set me on the defensive, but I refocused on my carriers and dug in. Next battle was another defense of Iceland, but this time I hung back and repeatedly sent air strikes against the British ships huddled in the bay outside of Reykjavik, which ended with another bloody loss for the Royal Navy, though this time with little damage in return. By the end of the war, the Royal Navy had no battleships left and only a couple of BCs. That’s the only time in this game I’ve gone from contemplating defeat to so thorough a victory.
