Is there an advantage to having more than one type of aircraft of a particular role, fighter for example? Or is it best to label the one with slightly less performance "obsolete" so that all my units will fly the better fighter instead of splitting between the two?
Thanks.

There are two advantages IMO: 1) You have two chances for getting an "improved type" event (and then can obsolete the unimproved type) 2) It takes some time to get reliability data, if you have not yet got that information for both types having two gives you twice the chance for a more reliable plane.

Also, different planes might be better for different things. A fast, manoeuvrable fighter might be good as an interceptor, while a slower but long-ranged one would be good for escorting strikes.

While that sounds nice in theory, you can not really assign interceptor or escort roles to fighters. So i'd go with whatever you deem the "best" and be done with it.

i'm playing A-H in 1934 right now and don't have any ship strike aircraft tech yet so all my CVs are equipped with only fighters
my last fighter was capable of carrying bombs but my newest fighter can not - i wish i could re-designate my older fighter as a bomber so i could carry at least some sort of strike aircraft on my carriers

And they are probably "better" at level bombing than fighters.
Also you can try to buy foreign plane designs. I ran into the same problem in my current germany game. Early 30s and leading in carrier design and building, but no attack planes. Probably should have tried bying AI models... sth i forgot about and would have made my wars against the UK and UK+ITA so much easier.

i tried buying foreign designs and it always says "only Allied nations will sell aircraft" - i always refuse to ally myself with any country because i never think it's worth losing budget so it looks like i have to wait until i get the proper tech
otherwise yes, i'm starting to deploy med bombers more to make up for it, and they seem to do ok in the couple battles i'v had so far
