Frankly speaking I found reliable engines just too much costs for a little decrease of risk.
I use raiders with medium range and normal engines and have no issue in RTW. And usually Even get less ships internet that AI. I think that reliable engines are not worth the money and long range sometimes helps but I find it more useful for intercepting raider than raider itself.

Well... having the engine built for speed is not only about actually having a fast ship. It can also be about being able to have more armour or weapons on a regular speed as well.
You can still end up with engine problem during a scenario you are just more likely with an engine built for power. I suppose you can to some degree counter this by being a bit more careful of using high speed too much in a scenario. If you on the other hand has reliable engines you can instead run at full speed more often without fear of engine problems.
There are just a risk reward and an operational/tactical way to handle it.
I don't think it has any right or wrong answers in general. You can build a ship with reliable engines and still be fast, you just will have to sacrifice something else. As long as you use the ship to take advantage of its strength it probably will pay for itself in the end.
