My design team has had a discussion at the Admiralty with Force Commanders to get their ideas on upgrading the Town class. Most would like more guns especially firing forward and aft. They would like rapid fire guns like the 3 pounders for anti-submarine work. They say that you don't have much time to fire at the submarines when they are discovered on the surface before they submerge. Fast firing guns are more valuable. We will take this under advisement. The Force Commanders who conduct operations in the North Sea, Atlantic and the Channel need better seakeeping ability for their ships. We will get started with the new sub-class. The First Sea Lord has authorized this.

I changed the name of this thread to 20th Century Warship History, Construction and Springsharp. With RTW, RTW2 and SAI, I feel strongly that we should present actual history and construction along with some interesting designs using Springsharp 2.1.

If you examine ships built during the middle and late 19th century, you will see masts. Apparently the reason was that the British did not have coaling stations in the Pacific, so they had to do something. As they developed the bulk transports that carried the coal and built coaling stations, many of those masts were removed to improve speed. The masts of course, created aerodynamic drag even when used, so ship performance improved.
