The randomness and unpredictability of invasions is widely acknowledged as one of, if not the, most frustrating aspects of RTW2. Here's my suggestion for fixing it.
Base invasion chance: 1% + (1 per month of region targeted) - (1/2 region value, rounded up). [This should allow for high value regions like India to be invaded while also reflecting the difficulty in attacking such prosperous regions.]
Blockade and supremacy modifies: unchanged.
Home Regions: can be invaded, has a region value of 100. Successful invasion triggers government capitulation rather than region conquest. Think Vichy France. Use reskin of government collapse victory. Perhaps also include forced treaty, again like Vichy France.
Neutral Nations: Can be invaded, have 2X Region Value penalty. Invasion increases International tensions by 5.
Invasion techs: increase range by 100nm rather than 50nm.
Thoughts?

I would like to see invasions techs from 1930-45 that greatly increase the chance of invasions occurring, so that it feels more like WW2 where you can have fast speed campaigns that invade and take over several areas within a single year of war.

Yeah, I had a two year war with France, for pretty much 90% of the time I had 30 ship points in the area (among them 3 battleships) while France had none. Yet still no invasion.
On the other hand, for a month or so they had a light cruiser in an area while my ship was repaired and tada, they managed to pull off an invasion (while I blockaded their home area! Where do their troops come from?).
This is currently a really frustrating mechanic.

I would agree it would be good to look at it if it works as intended.
I have similar experience, USA invaded me the first turn of war and next month next possession half globe elsewhere. I give money for invasion almost a year and nothing happen. And it was not only in this war.
Right now, invasion has almost no reason for player as it is quite costly. It is not good investment at all. So it is more likely trying to invade strategic important location mainly as Panama/Suez/possession with oil.

Carefully choosing my words here,
I'd imagine in order to pace the game, you obviously cant have an invasion fire off every month or so. So what's reasonable? I had a Japanese game where I had 3 invasions successfully complete in a year or so before the war ended with a 6 point colony award. That was pretty fun. But on the other hand, you get an 8 or 10 point colony settlement for absolutely destroying a nations navy in a 37 month conflict, yet for more than a year completely dominating a sea zone, the invasion doesn't trigger? Seems like a completely random mechanic and I think it's a little frustrating. I'm not quite happy with the way it's working. It makes me wonder if the invasion is working right.
Solutions:
Maybe we need more in game messages saying we need more navy there... or Maybe we need a message saying we need to spend more money on it... or Maybe we need to have an invasion and be updated on the ongoing battle?
Something, please!
Edit: Importantly, if Invasions dont work... cuz we tend to keep the war going in order to get them, the payoff being we get the colony, but otherwise the focus would be on quick wars. Get them over fast, get the colony award, start another war and rinse and repeat. The payoff for shorter wars would be higher than engaging in a long war where invasions just dont trigger. I like longer wars with a reward at the end. I dunno, NWS, this whole thing just really pisses me off, lol.
