I'll chime in by adding that I've stopped using the 'Detach' command due to its unreliability. I've lost a good dozen capital ships over the last 2 playthroughs from 'Detached' capital ships that head off in a completely random direction. Admittedly, there was one case where a 60% flotation-damage BC wandered off in the direct opposite direction of my only Mediterranean base...and directly into the middle of the Italian's CV force. Still, either have 'Disengage' as a role option, or improve the 'Detach' pathfinding/logic. If you're on captain mode, you can detach, turn off AI control, and send them straight back to a base. And that is one major reason I play with that setting.

I can confirm that the current detach system only works about 40% of the time for me. Also doesn't seem to work if a ship has already detached for a different reason. This is the #1 reason I play on Captain's mode.
