As someone who prefer to rear admiral mode, I am often frustrated by the "ship out of visual range" stripping me of any control over my squadron. I understand that even with radio communication, coordinating a large fleet is very difficult still, especially at night or over great distance. Nevertheless, I feel players should be given a greater degree of beyond visual range control of their squadrons as technology advances.
At the very least, I propose that the player should have same degree of control as they currently do while in visual range. Once out of visual range but with appropriate technology, squadrons should be able to be given order with regard to changing squadron roles and order to move in a particular direction. This should come at a delay, have a risk of being misunderstood(based on crew exp) , and have a potential cool down to make misunderstanding/delay more punishing (In real life the admiral wouldn't be able to realize the order was misinterpreted right away). The enemy may also getting spotting info whenever such order was issued(this can be tied to espionage/decoding etc, but no need to be overly complicated either).
I think this will hopefully make things like cruiser squadron more useful since they can be coordinated at longer range/during poor weather. Potential misunderstanding and miscommunication can also make things interesting and realistic. I don't think this detracts from RTW's attempt to show the limited control real admiral have of their fleet, in fact being able to issue general order at long distance that may or may not work out to your favor should only adds to the experience.

I want more roles to exist. I'd love to switch back to rear admiral or even admiral mode, but I don't trust my ships to avoid stupidity if I do that. Let me help them not be stupid. And comms tech would help a lot, if properly implemented.
