I was perusing through another forum and someone had started famous war movies thread and I thought " Why Not". So here we go. Here are some of my favorites and I have them on DVD and from Youtube.
Battle of Britain - My personal favorite Das Boot Desert Rats The Desert Fox Sink The Bismarck The Malta Story Spitfire - Leslie Howard's last movie - He went into the RAF and died on a recce mission over the Bay of Biscay Sahara - Bogie version in the Western Desert The Dam Busters 633 Squadron The Cruel Sea Mrs. Miniver In Which We Serve And as an added bonus, my favorite scene from Battle of Britian -"Help yourselves Everybody-There's no fighter escort"
www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHx3lWQjNWM
This scene depicts the action of Luftflotte 5 on 15 August 1940, when groups of He-111's(Those are represented in the movie), Ju-88's and some HE-115's attacked the eastern coast. They were from Denmark and Norway bases. German intelligence had assumed that with the action in the SE that no squadron's would be available. This was not the case, they were picked up on radar and intercepted. Many bombers released their bombs early and headed for home, others just turned around but many were downed. It was a disaster and never attempted again. The first words are by the group commander finding out how close they were to the coast, then he orders all gunners to their station then tells the group that they were within three minutes of the coast. That was when the fun began.
Note: I've left out many for you

I like Battle of Britain (my favorite scene was with the Polish pilots) and Das Boot (the best sub movie ever, IMHO). I saw The Cruel Sea on TV many moons ago) I also like the following:
Tora Tora Tora Midway (saw it when it came out in the theaters when I was 12; loved the Sensaround, thought they could have dispensed with the love story) The Gallant Hours (starring James Cagney as Halsey during the Guadalcanal campaign) Run Silent, Run Deep Operation Pacific We Dive at Dawn (a British WW2 sub movie)

I just download a free copy of "We dive at dawn". The other are nice and I enjoy them. Nice list.

My favourite war films are: Paths of Glory Battle of the River Plate and Operation Daybreak The first movie is considered one of best anti-war movies, great cast. The second is another classic. I've never seen the third, I will have to try it. Thanks.

Here are a few more of my favorites: Bataan - Desi Arnez's first movie - Remember I love Lucy. A Yank in the RAF They Were Expendable - Movie is from the book of the same name about PT boats in the Philippines at the beginning of the war. Good sailing scenes. Suicide Squadron - This film is famous for the music score which was by Richard Addinsell and was the famous "Warsaw Concerto". Recommend you see it on youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkTadWECNIA - The intro to the movie. Enjoy. This one of my favorite pieces.

You didn´t specify which war, so I´ll have to add "Gettysburg".

You didn´t specify which war, so I´ll have to add "Gettysburg". Any war fits the bill and Gettysburg Is a great one. Gods and General, the second is a good movie. The movie "The North and the South" was a good one also.

No one is mentioning U 571? That was one of my favorites, to me it was so flawed it was a very good comedy. I just got BOB on Netflix and watched it again. Good movie for a history buff but rather boring if not. Tora Tora Tora is my favorite I think. Stalingrad is good, but very depressing. Enemy at the gates is also reasonably good and not too off the rails factually.

Here's one for you: "Target For Tonight". This was a British picture filmed in 1941 and acted by the RAF. It was the story about a Wellington aircraft. The name of the plane was "F for Freddie". The players are all actual RAF personnel at Mildenhall. It is about as realistic as you can get.... it was filmed during an actual raid.

The best was a Japanese film titled "I bombed Pearl Harbor".

Here's a movie I saw years ago as a kid, and recently downloaded to my iPod: High Flight youtu.be/8l4byhJVA8oWhile not really a "war" movie, (although it does have some combat scenes at the end), it has some great aerial sequences featuring de Havilland Vampires and Hawker Hunters.
