Not really freakish but unexpected all the same, I had three Russian battleships slug it out with five Japanese battleships. I figured I was going to get my head handed to me but a lucky hit on MIKASA left it dead in the water, the turret on ASAHI blew up sinking that ship and the FUJI ran into a minefield. The hits on both sides were fairly even but the Japanese lost three battleships and mine were just wounded.

I was playing a user-created Battle of the River Plate scenario. After sinking EXETER and being hounded around the map by AJAX and ACHILLES for a couple of hours, the AI-controlled GRAF SPEE apparently lost his temper turned head-on into the two CLs, that were then steaming in line abreast, and ran right smack between them, passing within 150 yards or so of both ships, with a combined closing speed of 40+ knots. Probably not very realistic.
SaI wasn't designed for post-1920 technology or tactical doctrine, of course, so it's not too surprising that the AI would do something very odd in the scenario. But it was strange to watch that unfold and think, "is he really going to do that? Really? REALLY? DID I JUST SEE THAT?!?"
Good times.

^it's possible the AI graf spee had a destroyed bridge!! I remember losing Seydlitz that way (morale of that was to never slug it out against BBs with BCs). It broke formation and headed right into the enemy line.

Nah, that sumbitch steamed across four miles or more of open water and threaded AJAX and ACHILLES like Willie misbehaving during a naval review at Cowes.

I have often noticed that during a stern chase a weaker enemy allows the chaser to close the distances. I suppose that this is done for reasons of playability. I find more exasperating to see some ships of mine trapped in the recesses of the coast, apparently unable to rejoin the main force. Another strange situation is created in the Baltic campaign when, one turn after another, you can destroy enemy convoys with just a couple of destroyers. Moreover, these small ships seem able to save countless shipwreck people.

Everytime I play the Tondern Raid scenario the German AI will break off engagement and then steam up the middle of their minefield towards Tondern and then get stuck on the land mass
