It's frustrating when I choose the 're-work design' button, but the game immediately kicks me out (either because another design study has also completed in the same turn, or for unknown reasons.) I also don't think there's any logical reason why the player shouldn't be permitted to return to a paper design several years later and use it as the basis for a new one.

In a similar vein, I want to be able to Open Design for a ship that's in construction, instead of being limited to viewing the ship card.

Yeah, I want to be able to wait a month to redesign a completed study. Or check the almanac while working on a refit design. And I want to use a refit design as the basis for a new ship class. And not have to do the copy paste config file dance for the superstructure.

However, if you bring up the right click menu for any design currently in development, "open design" becomes greyed-out for all ships, in service or in construction (I have a thread for this issue in the bug forum).

There's a workaround for this. Build one of the completed design, open design and rework, then scrap the building. The bug rimbecano mentioned can be avoided by reloading the save

You can also just open the ship design file (look it up in the build dialogue if you forget the name) and work from there--I am pretty sure you still get the design cost benefits.

Hmm. It is true. But you can go around. Start build one of ships of such design. After that start your updated design. And last cancel construction of such ship.

You sure you restarted the game before trying?
