This was unfortunatly common in WW2, especially in the Med thanks to Italy's heavy use of mines and some fairly daring torpedo strikes, plus the usual air power. Several ships in the area had incidents where they lost the bow, stern and on one occasion both ends of the hull. Towed ships were taken in the direction opposite the damage site to minimise flooding and assist the crew in damage control, and then undergo what was usually a lengthy rebuild but that was better than losing the ship.
It would be nice to be able to to the same ingame.
How it could be added ingame? Similar to the 'detatch to rescue survivors' option but this would cause one of your ships to slowly drag the stricken one to the nearest friendly port. You would lose the towing ship from your command for the remainder of the battle but the trade off is that you have much better chances of keeping the stricken ship alive. Providing the enemy doesn't find the slow moving pair anyway.
The ship being towed would be preserved rather than listed as 'sinking' but left otherwise entirely disabled (except maybe AA?), if the towing ship is too small to make reasonable progress or the damage is too heavy then eventually the ship might be lost. But if it's a 50/50 on getting a rather expensive cruiser back then it's worth the chance...

I think that idea is good but in way how RTW2 is done there is no place for that.
Towing is strategic. There was not done for ships under attack as it geopardize even undamaged ship. It took time, it was quite difficult to do and towing of large capital ship was especially difficult.

Would it be possible to have escorts aid in firefighting?
DDs already pick up survivors if no enemy is nearby, it would be nice to have them also help stricken carriers.
