I've long wanted something like SAI's operational campaign mode for RTW. Even if operational-level features aren't added to RTW, however, it would be really nice to see a preferences option for "long" battles: battles that start with the player's fleet leaving port as in SAI campaign mode, and last several days. Some of the battle types would probably have to be different, instead of "cruiser battle" you might have "cruiser patrol", instead of "fleet battle" you might have "reconnaissance in force" or "intelligence on enemy fleet activity", and contact with the enemy would not be guaranteed.
I think operations involving carriers would *really* benefit from such an option.
For certain operational areas the differences between having long battles on and off would be minor (operations in the Baltic or Adriatic would be very similar to what we have currently, due to the confined nature of those areas), for others it would be very different (e.g, in the Pacific).

I second the idea. It can be seen by some players as potentially taking far too long to conduct possibly fruitless searches, so maybe make “long mission” something toggle on/off.
My other concern is the idea probably have to be adopted to better handle these missions rather than either wonder around like aimless flies or follow preset paths too rigidly. However I definately support the idea and would love to see it implemented(even though I understand this is likely no simple task)

Which is why I said it should be a preferences option. Probably could be done with a combination of objectives ("patrol these five points with your BCs") and intel reports ("room 40 believes an enemy CL patrol will be in this 100mi^2 region at 1300"), but, of course, intel should never be too reliable ("Admiral? Don't you think that looks a bit too battlecruisery for a CL?" "Yup. Curse you room 40!").
