Basing this off of the explosions from St.Lo (Or Princeton can't remember exactly) but during the evacuations of the ship, bomb detonations threw shrapnel all over the rescuing destroyers and light cruisers. I don't know for sure but I don't think that this is modeled in game in general with ships normally just sinking with no secondaries. I think that though a small change it would provide an actual challenge for picking up survivors in game.
Edit: It was Princeton, excerpt from Wiki: Casualties on Princeton herself were relatively light considering the intensity of her fires; only 108 men (10 officers and 98 enlisted men) were lost, while 1,361 crewmen were rescued. Casualties were much heavier aboard Birmingham which was devastated by secondary explosions aboard Princeton while fighting fires, with 233 killed and 426 wounded.[2][5] Three other ships were more lightly damaged while assisting Princeton:
Birmingham — heavy topside damage, 2 5-in., 2 40 mm and 2 20 mm guns lost. Morrison — foremast lost, portside smashed Irwin — forward 5-in. mounts and director out, starboard side smashed. Reno — one 40 mm smashed.
