I just got AON, so I did a redesign. I knocked off BE and DE, saw a lot of tonnage, and forgot to change the armor scheme to AON. It would have been nice if the designer had warned me.
Concrete proposal:
A (weak version): If a ship has non-zero B or D and zero BE or DE and AON is available but not used as the armor scheme, warn in the design checker. B (strong version): Always warn if AON is available but not being used.
BTW, the same sort of thing often happens with oil: I get oil-fired tech, but by the time I'm designing my next ship I forget to change it. I know the checker warns after oil is "universally available"; it would be good if it warned even before universal availability if your empire has oil-fired AND access to oil through a territory.

AON is automatically applied if your ship meets all the conditions. It's not an "armor scheme" like "protected cruiser" or "flat deck on top of belt", but one of the conditions for it is the "flat deck on top of belt" armor scheme, so I assume that's what you mean when you say that you forgot to change the armor scheme to AON.

Yes this is what I meant - forgetting to set "flat deck on top of belt". OTOH, this raises a good point - I don't know if it does now, but if AON (the technology) is available, then non-zero BE or DE should also generate a warning if "flat deck on top of belt" is chosen for the armor scheme. I didn't think of it when I wrote it, but arguably this case is covered by the strong version of the suggestion (B) "Always warn if AON is available but not being used". To digress into pedantry, I would argue that AON actually *is* an armor scheme - it involves creating an armored citadel etc. So it wouldn't be unreasonable for the game to add a further choice to the armor scheme options called "AON" that would automatically zero out BE and DE and give the AON bonuses. Given that it's already coded up the way it is, however, I don't think it's worth wasting Fredrik's time on (assuming the requested warnings are put in).
