so as i said in my bomb table thread Here nws-online.proboards.com/thread/3728/ap-bomb-charti would also find the diffrence between oxygen torpedoes and non oxygen torpedoes my destroyers as viewed in the picture have guns which have a range of 13052 yards and my torpedoes (max tech) have 13000 yards range at 27 knots and at 5000 range they have 38 knot speed now oxygen torpedoes state the following "Oxygen fueled torpedoes When oxygen fueled torpedoes have been invented, their use can be selected in the doctrine screen. Oxygen fuelled torpedoes give considerably better torpedo performance at the risk of more devastating torpedo explosions if torpedo tubes are hit." as show in the picture of my gunrange the gunrange of 13050 yards is barely shorter than the torpedo range of 13000 yards what is interesting is throughout my tests against 2 knot test targets i was unable to lock onto any target with torpedoes beyond 13000 meters even though the torpedo range should be slightly more using pixel measuring in ms paint the range to the gun range circle from my destroyer was 272 pixels the range to the torpedo circle was 287 pixels doing some simple math you find that 287/100*95 is 272,65 so you gain 5% range taking oxygen torpedoes in the trade off for having destroyers randomly have torpedoes explode
i have absolutely no idea if the torpedoes gain 2x speed as i have no way of finding out neither do i know if they have twice the warhead size
but i can find range and there was not more than a 5% improvement in range from taking oxygen torpedoes if anyone achieved other results or my oxygen torpedoes are bugged please do tell me Attachments:

I am actually a bit stunned you all had no idea about the real oxygen fuelled torpedoes, I thought it was pretty much common prerequesite knowledge to play this game. Yeah game torps kinda suck compared to the on paper specs for the type 93.
This is news? i didnt know i thought everybody was lollipops about the inaccuracy and differences.
The fischer tropsch stuff is a bit outta date and incomplete, the nav weps data is always good, but get a copy of "Campbell's Naval Weapons of WW2", best primary source material , its pure joy. Also the Online Pacific War Encyclopedia is really well written.
In game....
The torpedo performance is listed in the data cards and at max tech they underperform compared to the type 93 the IJN used, speed at fast/short range setting and ranges at all settings are worse than the type 93, presumablly and this may be why all the torpedoes have weaker warheads, they also dont appear to be 24 inch weapons the type 93 is a larger heavier and more capable weapon because of its size and its propulsion every torp in game seems to be 18 or 21 inch.
Since they have lots of technical issues, cost more, require periodic deep maintenance and special training to employ and only actually give very marginal improvement over steam driven and electric torpedoes, no other navy used oxygen fuelled torpedoes, the British had attempted but gave up, oddly a (incorrect) intel report from an IJN liasion officer in the UK in 1927 regarding HMS Rodney having oxygen propelled torpedoes was responsible for the IJN's eventually successful efforts and got them to keep trying til they got them to work in the 1930's.
Even then they never got their investment back either, ffinal Phit% for the war for this weapon was less than 1%. In game probably pretty much about that good overall. Lol.
Until guided torpedoes become available thats as good as it gets and the early guided ones were not that great and not used by surface ships anyways only subs and planes.

Is tlhis just a list or are these the stats, because I can read most of that as different types, nationalities and sizes of torpedoes and some of it looks like speed and range settings data, if this stuff changes might it affect the in game performance? I think I will go mess around with torpedo stuff look at those files AND the Hpen and Vpen files again. Hmmm. I dont know how but gotta be a way to mod torp data, i figured out gun pen so matter of trying and looking. If i find anything useful as opposed to useless i will aprise.

no its not sure the observations are from 1945 but that dosent make it outdated that makes it even more trustworthy because it was a direct first hand report on japanese naval tech but even a 53.3 cm torpedo using oxygen propulsion performed better than any torpedo we have in game type 95 model 1 oxygen propulsion 330 HP / 13,100 yards (12,000 m) / 45-47 knots 430 HP / 9,850 yards (9,000 m) / 49-51 knots notice the absolute speed on this torpedo compared to the one in game or american torpedoes it goes practically 20 knots faster than the mark 15 mod 3 or the torpedo in game or the type 95 model 2 330 HP / 8,200 yards (7,500 m) / 45-47 knots 430 HP / 6,000 yards (5,500 m) / 49-51 knots but this one has 550 kg warhead FOR A 53.3 CM TORPEDO also literally no one used smaller than 53.3 cm torpedoes (21") in ww2 except for the germans using a smaller airborne torpedo (which was garbage) and the soviets using a 450mm torpedo for their torpedo bombers and for one single type of destroyer THE ONLY nation to use smaller than 53.3 cm torpedoes on ships was russia which used them on a single destroyer the fact we have (presumably) 5 nations using 18 inch torpedoes all though the game is stupid "Even then they never got their investment back either, ffinal Phit% for the war for this weapon was less than 1%. "problem is the vpen and hpen files make perfect sense vpen is vertical pen hpen is horizontal pen (decks) and the ranges and pen values all make sense for example 400 for 20 inch guns at point blank mean 40,0 inches of pen so its super easy to edit the penetration table everything about these 2 files are easy to understand same goes for gundata and ordinance table but torpedo data makes 0 sense because almost all of the letters make 0 sense sw in gundata stands for shell weight rof stands for rate of fire and mr means max range now what the Hell does RH mean ? what about SH RL SL or N the only 2 things that make sense are WH (warhead) and CAL which is caliber if the devs told us what things meant that would be nice but i havent heard anything either way oxygen torpedoes should increase torpedo performance but they barely even increase it by any significant amount in game on top of the fact that 99.99% of torpedoes launched at max range miss their target because 26,5 knots and 13nm range means most ships can A outrun the torpedoes B dodge them very easily because they are so god damn slow id like to note if you want to edit torpedo performance the best way to do so is in the ResearchAreas file and edit the torpedo performance there
if you want to edit warhead effectiveness i suspect you might need to fiddle with the TorpedoData file and adjust the WH numbers |

Campbell used fischer so its the same data, reason campbell is good is it covers all nationalities in one place and format. I got lotsa fischer tropsche hardcopy printouts they are great but campbells covers more, not just the IJN. And has better pictures. Fischer tropsche is better for strictly IJN only, thats indoubtably true and for some IJN stuff it is the only source at all. I use them both. Campbells more since not everything is IJN. I usuallybrecomend it for wargamers as well since it is available as ahrdcopy and covers all the navies we usually see in wargames. 1% for the whole war is the phit% for the tyoe 93. Sucks they had so many problems. Christiian I know what the headings inthe torp data file mean, pretty standard for torpedo data. Its the multiple settings, run time at speed that seems weird. Here bro. A, B, C, D, E,F, are just letter designation for the torpedo model. Cal = size in inches. Wh = warhead weight in pounds. RH = Range high speed setting. I THINK ITS IN RUNTIME SECONDS, ON THE GAME CLOCK, ITS NOT IN METERS or yards or thousands of yards. SH = speed High in knots. RL = Range Low speed setting for the long range slow speed setting. SL = speed low, in knots again, for the long range slow setting. N= nation. R russia, F france, J Japan, B Britain, G German, Italians and Americans must use other nations torpedoes, I think the USN is assigned C, which with a 10% increase in performance which I think is what the Oxy torps give, through research, its stats dovetail about right, 35 kts + 10% round down = 38 kts. Christian and Oldpop which model of torpedo do you both think the USN is using in game? My guess is model C, even though its listed as a 20 incch weapon and the USN used no 20 inch ASuW torps.. But fictional world game equivalent could be what we are working with, just my guess on hiw the game functions. I believe each nation is assigned a basic model of torpedo which receives tech upgrades, as you progress through the game and research, the oxy torp only gives a 10% improvement, probably. The torps in game underrperform vs the on paper stats but realistically they may be about right. In fact compared to the paper stats for the 93 they are all crap! Expected though since the 93 was sooooo good. Slower, shorter ranged and lesser warhead weight, nevermind if its torpex, amatol or not! One thing not listed that i would expect is wander, Not there at all it might be a game mechanic or not used. Have a good weekend. Thanks. |

I like to drill down and get other sources. I went to my copy of Japanese Destroyer Captain to find some information about the Oxygen Torpedo. In the battle around Borneo, the NAKA and seven destroyers released 43 torpedoes at a distance of 15,000 meters or 14,404,1995 yards against moving targets. The author states that at that distance they could not expect any hits. A dozen of the torpedoes blew up after a few thousand meters, no reason is known. He states that the oxygen-fueled torpedoes were so sensitive that they would frequently blow up if they hit the wake of a ship. Later, 23 torpedoes were launched but one jumped out of the water and this told the enemy what was coming so they combed the torpedoes and they missed. |

Fischer tropsche is better for strictly IJN only, thats indoubtably true and for some IJN stuff it is the only source at all. I use them both. Campbells more since not everything is IJN. I usuallybrecomend it for wargamers as well since it is available as ahrdcopy and covers all the navies we usually see in wargames. 1% for the whole war is the phit% for the tyoe 93. Read the article on the type 93 torp in the Pacific War Online Encyclopedia (if you are not familiar withthis site give it a chance please, its very good 1 in 20 chance to hit a BB at 14 miles range, though none were ever hitnof course). I actually was a bit surprised to find that out as well, the weapon does have a stellar reputation. Here bro. A, B, C, D, E,F, are just letter designation for the torpedo model. Cal = size in inches. Wh = warhead weight in pounds. RH = Range high speed setting. I THINK ITS IN RUNTIME SECONDS, ON THE GAME CLOCK, ITS NOT IN METERS or yards or thousands of yards. SH = speed High in knots. RL = Range Low speed setting for the long range slow speed setting. SL = speed low, in knots again, for the long range slow setting. N= nation. R russia, F france, J Japan, B Britain, G German, Italians and Americans must use other nations torpedoes, I think the USN is assigned C, which with a 10% increase in performance which I think is what the Oxy torps give, through research, its stats dovetail about right, 35 kts + 10% round down = 38 kts. Christian and Oldpop which model of torpedo do you both think the USN is using in game? My guess is model C, even though its listed as a 20 incch weapon and the USN used no 20 inch ASuW torps.. But fictional world game equivalent could be what we are working with, just my guess on hiw the game functions. I believe each nation is assigned a basic model of torpedo which receives tech upgrades, as you progress through the game and research, the oxy torp only gives a 10% improvement, probably. The torps in game underrperform vs the on paper stats but realistically they may be about right. In fact compared to the paper stats for the 93 they are all crap! Expected though since the 93 was sooooo good. Slower, shorter ranged and lesser warhead weight, nevermind if its torpex, amatol or not! One thing not listed that i would expect is wander, Not there at all it might be a game mechanic or not used. Have a good weekend. If we could find a way to establish a test facility in the game, say take a destroyer and let it fire a torpedo at another ship and track its progress, but I don't see how the game will allow for that.

Test facility.....shooting range! Thats a good idea. Oh I need to read Hara's book, its in my stack, I heard the translation was bonked referring to homing torpedoes instead of oxygen propelled, not sure if thats true hut if itis wow thats not right! Good one oldpop!
Christian the letters down the first column A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, are not the nation those are just the torpedo model in the game, the type. No country name begins, with C, D, E so I dont think thats data thats just indicative of the model.
The letters in the N column are the nation. Notice J, F, G, B, this is why I think the US uses someone elses torp. Italian and AH as well. Considering that the USN bought the rights to both Whitehead and Schwarzkopf torpedoes they all start with pretty similar stats in 1900 maybe the game does it that way, I dont know I am a bit stumped the numbers look good for speed in kts but the ranges/runtimes seem incongrous, yer both right.
Now i went in and tried to change the tech tree it reads changed but changes nothing in game afaik. The torps still do 38/5000 on high speed, i had upped it to 48 to 8000 sine I was surenI would see a difference if it worked, no or I am a worse JAFO than I thought.

Rh is definitely run high and i think its in seconds, could be range high as well. But thats the range or time it runs at high speed. Likewise for RL.
As for the type 93 like oldpop was also saying and better than I was, darn nice example there, they wer not the super weapon they have come to be thiught of.
23 allied ships were sunk by Long Lances and 3 Japanese ships by accident not counting the ones that cooked off and sank the ship carrying them.
Over 1000 long lances were launched, heck at Java Sea 164 torpedoes in 30+ launches only 3 ships sunk.
So not really as good as its reputation.
