Real world reasons dont apply, its not our world and its not real.
And getting all wrapped up in what was real is also moot since the weights of the armor are not real, the guns are not real models just approximationsof guns of that caliber, and the ships and planes are not the ones on our earth, i regularly get a fighter named Catalina, makes me giggle, I am imagining a PBY Catalina fighter....nope not workin.
Resources are irrelevant since they are variable in RTW, i have oil on Midway for instance in this current save. So any and all reasons that have to do with OUR EARTH'S HISTORY are a matter of preference. The whole point of this type of sim is not to follow history all that closely, so why argue to adhere to it in any way? Also why argue for limits on what a player can do or try? If your worried about the AI whipping you then you probably have bigger problems than ship size.
If you can design it, buy it and build it you should be able to have it. We should be god in our own sandbox, right? It is ours, we did buy it, correct? Heres where bombing it on the slips before the Death Star is completed becomes part of the enemies plans or ours!
Lol, I only built one ship but it weighs 275000 tons! Its huge, bright pink and smells terrible! KMS Pink Bunkerdoo! Its an AMC. I want one. All of Germanynstarved form4 years to make it happen....totally worth it right!
I strongly oppose limits on platforms in simulation, it makes games less fun AND simulations less useful.
Frankly couldnt believe there was a tonnage cap, its unneeded in a single player game. For 5$ more (will send my CC# right now), can you remove mine please? Thanks. Always willing to pay for what I value.
I dont think guns bigger than 20" are needed nor thicker armor, no one even mentioned that the stuff on H44 was not larger than whats already in game, plus the AI never builds to max limits anyway so it would probably be the player going for broke right?
Hey I adore RTW2, i use it, play it daily, but I would like to be able to do more with it. If I could get it to do what I can do on paper with Battlewagon, General Quarters II, or Command at Sea, that would be swell.
Limits are not value-added. Just my position.. Dizzy i agree with you on a lot of what your saying, I will leave it at that.
Thanks.
I understand the concerns about how doubling the upper tonnage limit would impact realism, but there is a simple solution to that - just make it an option and warn the player that with battleships so large, the game will become less realistic. Enabling a player to choose how they want to play it, only adds value to the game, and especially so if the game is a sandbox simulator, as RTW2 is. More over, being able to play to 1970 is the same thing in this regard. The tech couldn't have just stopped advancing past 1950 in any of the possible scenarios. Technological advancement is inherently exponential and basically unstoppable. Yet the player is given the choice to continue playing for 20 more years, and that's great. So, something similar should be done with tonnage limit. As a compromise, perhaps make it lower than 180k tons proposed by dizzy, but at least make it so that it would be possible to build H44.
Currently the the game has 20 inch limits to both, guns and armor, but this limit can't be reached effectively in a design. I can build a battleship with 20 inch guns, but it will either be lacking adequate protection or have too few main guns. I can also build a battleship with a belt of 20 inches, but it will be lacking protection in other areas and / or not having an adequate firepower.
Additionally, I'll bring up my old request to be able to disable hard end of your campaign, as it's related. I made a post about how I was willing to make it my personal mod but I wasn't getting any help - or replies eventually. Playing to 1970 with WW2 tech is already very unrealistic and I believe that a player should be able to extend their playthrough, if such is their preference. Such limitations take away from the fun factor for me.
If either or both of these limits (tonnage and campaign run time) would be extended, I'd gladly pay for it. Alternatively, I'm willing to do it myself but it seems to be hardcoded and I wouldn't know what to look for. The easiest and the and the most essential thing you can do to increase both the value and the lifespan of your game is to enable players to choose how they want to play it and how they want to mod it.
- edit:
Here's a possible scenario of how a superbattleship would have been built in reality. Imagine there was a war winning national hero admiral (just like you can be in RTW2) and he was respected by the nations dictator, and they both had megalomania (Germany comes to mind). Then given the different and optimal historical circumstances, it would have been quite easy for such admiral to persuade the dictator to build the superbattleship of his dreams. His arguments would have been that it would be impermeable to everything that their enemies would initially be throwing at it, and that it would allow for very bold / aggressive naval operations, and also that it would be a considerable morale boost for the military / navy and even civilians. Such arguments would not have been pure fantasy. If such ship would have been large enough, it would indeed have been basically impermeable to enemy weapons, initially. Of course, high altitude bombing attacks would probably have been held against it, using very heavy bombs, but what are the chances of bomb hits in such circumstances, when the ship is moving, with active AA and possibly air cover? Even if a very heavy bomb would hit such a battleship, it would have a decent chance at surviving it.
The way I would suggest it to be implemented is a player can purchase an accelerated building of the drydock with their reputation / status points. When it goes over 90k tons of capacity, the same increase of dock size would require an increasing amount of points, with a set hard limit of max drydock size, the reaching of which would require a very good reputation. Other nations would attempt to compete in building of drydocks and in building of superbattleships to their abilities, and perhaps accordingly to their preferences. Alternatively of course, drydock capacity limit can just be increased without any additional changes, and with an option to enable it - would still be awesome.
