I wanted to ask what's the forumla for determining the caliber and number of barrels possible during a turret rebuild. I have taken a look at a lot of turrets and the only thing i figured out is that they make little sense to me. Soemtimes you can go +/-2', sometimes 3 sometimes 4, sometimes 1. I failed to see any solid correlation between those numbers and the current gun layout. As the "Rebuild?" button is not available during ship design i wanted to figure out what turret size i would need for my treaty battleship which i later plan to outfit with proper guns.
Some numbers I found out by trial and error:
a double 10" gun can become a triple 8" or single 12" (+-2')
A double 12" gun can become a triple 8" or single 16" (+-4")
a double 14" gun can become a triple 10" gun or single18" (+-4")
a triple 14" gun become a double 17" or single 20" gun (-3")
A triple 11" gun can become a double 15" or single 19" (-4")
A double 9" gun can become a triple 7" or single 11" (+-2)
A single 9" gun can become a double 6" gun or triple 5" gun (+3/+1")
A single 6" gun can become a double 5" or triple 4" (-1")
Would anyone happen to know what the actual formula is?
I don't believe that there is a formula; rather, I suspect that it's a look-up table based partially on historical reconstructions planned or performed (e.g. Mogami's 5x3x6" => 5x2x8" reconstruction or the planned 3x3x11" => 3x2x15" rebuild for Scharnhorst and Gneisenau) and partially on some form of best-guess as to what would have been possible.
If that is so, could we get that list somehow? Or better yet, could the "Rebuild?" button be functional when designing a new ship, so we can see possible rebuilds for the future? The button does nothing except provide this information so I see no reason why it would be inactive durign design stage.
