How I imagine the process for launching torpedoes compares on enemy vessels vs my own.
Cruiser action, middle of the night, bridge of French DD Hallebarde, in combat vs Italian fleet elements:
Captain: Keep a careful eye men. The enemy is out there and the night shrouds them like a cloak.
Ensign: All batteries and torpedo stations are manned and ready, sir.
Captain: Excellent. Helm, increase speed and make the turn to starboard to regroup with the flagship.
Lookout: Large shadow to starboard, bearing 320, 3000 yards!
Captain: It's the enemy boys! LAUNCH A FULL SPREAD!
Ensign: But sir! That could be a friendly ship!
Captain: Aye, but it could be the enemy as well. They don't give us these torpedoes just to bring 'em back to port.
Ensign: But SIR...
Captain: Bring us around and ready the portside launchers!
And my own forces:
Fleet battle, noon, bridge of the squadron leader DD Nembo and bridge of task force leader Battlecruiser Pisa, in combat vs the perfidious french:
Admiral: Signal the Nembo and have her squadron start making torpedo runs against that battle line. We need them to give us an edge today.
Commander: Right away, sir. The Roma is taking a pounding, I hope they don't take too long.
Ensign: Sir! Orders from the Admiral. We are to commence torpedo runs with the rest of the squadron against the enemy battle line.
Captain: Very well ensign, on their next turn we will move to the engaged side. Helm, flank speed!
Commander: Admiral! They are engaging! Looks like they are moving to intercept that cruiser on our flank.
Admiral: And not a moment too soon. Maybe I underestimated the man.
Ensign: Sir! The squadron is ready to engage! That cruiser is less than 5000...
Captain: Hard to port! Get south of Marco Polo as fast as possible!
Ensign: But sir! What about our orders?
Captain: To hell with our orders! I will not risk this boat or this crew for that pompous ass! If he had the sea legs he could stomach the fight he's got him in now.
Petty Officer: Sir, the Nembo and her squadron are turning away.
Commander: WHAT!?
Admiral: Damn that man! Order the fleet to turn about and make best speed to Messina.
Ensign: Captain! The Fleet?! It's getting destroyed... The Pisa is slowing down and report the Admiral is transferring his flag to the Brindisi.
Captain: That damned fool! I hope he's happy with what happened here! He got what we wanted!
Ensign: I don't understand sir. If we had just executed our attack, maybe we could have sunk that cruiser, maybe we would have driven it off the flank of our battle line.
Captain: *Shakes his head slowly* Ensign, do you have any idea how much those torpedoes cost?
But seriously. It seems my own ships won't launch torpedoes even under threat of court martial and the AI ships launch torpedoes more frequently than they scrub the decks. This was a good way to relieve some stress from a series of poor battles I have had so far. Hope its worth a chuckle. And if anyone knows how to get your own squadrons to launch torpedoes against anything that isn't already a burning hulk then please let me know.
